I don't believe you will be able to trade in a M1 MBP or MBA as Apple only allows that when a new model of those same machines has been released. I could be wrong

Your best bet is to use Swappa for a private sale.
Yes, I agree. The M1 MBA and MBPs are not currently eligible for Apple trade-in.* Eligible is the keyword, but I'm not sure about the timing (although I think you're correct). I agree with others here that Swappa, or Mac of all trades (MacMeAnOffer.com), or CashForYourMac.com are reputable places many MR members have used with success, and these places will often take devices in trade (or selling outright at Swappa) before they become eligible for Apple trade-in.

* You can check the eligibility by going to Apple's trade-in site, entering the serial number, and viewing whether the model you want to trade appears on the list. As of today neither M1 is on the list.

The return window on my M1 MBP 13 (512/8) is open until the beginning of August, which hopefully will provide enough time to assess the newcomers. I think that if by some miracle Apple knocked a half pound of weight off the new MBP 16, I could go for it, since I'm wanting a bigger display. Which also makes the 14 an interesting option, too. OTOH, I've complained on another thread about the MBP's hard edge up front, so could also end up with an M1 MBA and its clam shell profile. These are happy dilemmas. Whatever I end up with, it will be the best laptop I've ever owned.
Where did you purchase yours with such a long return window? That's even more generous than Best Buy's Elite Plus at 45 days.

If at all possible, do the trade-in in person at the Apple Store. You don't want to risk getting screwed over by Phobio. I know you had a thread on that before but, just a friendly reminder to onlookers as well.

That is what I am planning on doing..I have a 2018 macbook pro 13 inch(256GB) I am going to do the trade in in store..never done it before but with covid and all feel better just to get a gift card, come home and purchase the new macbook pro..never formatted my laptop before but will have to figure it out

Might give in my 16" to Apple for the new 14". Still undecided if I'm picking up the new Pro 14" or wait fo the next generation of the Air.

Honestly the pandemic and becoming full remote, totally changed my view on the 16" (way to big for me these days now that I connect to the dual displays at home)

If new Macs are announced, I think the ability to trade-in current M1 will open up once you can make a purchase. I don't see that happening tomorrow. I have been wrong plenty of times on various subjects today. lol

Thanks for the info..sounds easy enough except for

Reset NVRAM

Shut down your Mac, then turn it on and immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, and R. Release the keys after about 20 seconds. This clears user settings from memory and restores certain security features that might have been altered.

That one seems like the hardest thing to do, maybe cause Ive never done it before..then I can reinstall the software and when I get to the setup assistant
To leave the Mac in an out-of-box state, don't continue setup. Instead, press Command-Q to shut down the Mac.
and I can bring it to the apple store

If your Mac reboots after using the NVRAM command in Terminal, you did it correctly.

Ok sounds good..I guess I just gotta hold it for 20 seconds, time it for 20 seconds or whatever and when it reboots I know I did it right..then I turn it off, turn it back on and go through the reformatting..they told me via chat on apple that I can bring it to the store and they can format it for me but I prefer to do it myself do I want them seeing my stuff, honestly no no one would

You can use the timer on your iPhone if you want to make sure about the exact time. :) If you need help once you actually start the 'get it ready process,' we can help so that you don't need to ask an Apple employee.

Apple takes trade-in at the Apple Store? In other words, I can deliver the trade in to Apple at the Apple Store? For some reason, I always thought you had to ship the trade-in to Apple.

You should be able to to an in person trade-in at the Apple Store now that stores are open again. If not, you will need to mail in and to Phobio, which will probably get you less than the online Apple quote.

To add to what Apple_Robert’s post, this is from Apple’s trade-in site:

”Trading in your device is as easy as buying a new one. We’ll give you a prepaid trade-in kit or shipping label to send it off. Or you can bring it to an Apple Store. We’ll either give you instant credit toward the purchase of a new product or send your device on to our recyclers.” [emphasis mine]

Using the trade-in site to get the estimated trade-in amount helps before going to the store. Just stop the process after you get the estimate.

It’s the same thing at Best Buy. You can bring it to a store or send it in. I would always do an in-store trade-in versus sending it off. There are too many things that can go wrong. That said, plenty of MR members have had good experiences sending off their devices for trades, but there are also lots of posts here about dealing with Apple’s third-party trade-in partner, Phobio. Search for Phobio on MR and you can read about these experiences.

I sold my 13“ M1 couple of weeks ago for around 70% of its original price, which in the end cost me about $300 over 6 months of ownership. I’m ok with that.
