Wait until after your trip and maybe until june/july?? The macbooks can easily be updated and with a new led screen/aluminum case and maybe 1 lbs lighter + a 2.5" hdd would be ideal.

I too am thinking about an Air, as an upgrade from a PB12inch. But my summer travels are going to be a lot of backpacking, staying in hostels, loading into busses, cheap hotels, etc, in addition to professional conferences. I don't want to be hindered by a heavy computer, but I also don't want to be hindered by worrying about a shiny, expensive new one either, since I travel fast and poor. And I'd much rather have an old computer broken or stolen than a new one.

A good point. I loved traveling that way 25+ years ago, and met lots of great people. But it's inevitable that sooner or later you'll run into someone who has no problem justifying a quick snatch  of some obviously valuable hardware.

As soon as I fondled one of these lovelies in the Apple Store, I immediately thot about all those MR posts bringing up the lack of a security slot.

 Oops, just realized how that may sound. I meant that I'll be extra-protective of the MBA I plan to buy in a couple months...not that I would hang out around rich Mac users and take advantage of this missing feature to save myself 2 or 3 grand.
