Just update your phone already. You're missing out on a lot of security updates and feature updates, tbh. Is ios 16 more demanding than 11? Obviously, but it'll work fine. I sold my iphone 8 plus to a guy at work several years back and he still uses it, and he's on the latest version. The only issue is he never replaced his battery, so of course his phone is slow.
[...] “so of course his phone is slow”.

No more words needed, OP.

Thank you for your detailed response! Oh, the third battery?! I'm still on its original battery and it's +/- ok for my needs. You must be using your phone a lot during a day? It's understandable that after such big update battery life will be worse than on iOS 11, but I see a comment about possible phone obliteration because of the update... 😰 Thank you for the contacts of people with the same iPhone model as mine!

Do you really think so? Why, is it because of the old battery or the phone model itself? Isn't 8 Plus supposed to be ok with iOS 16.6 as it receives it as an update?

Thank you for sharing your experience! How long do you think Apple will continue signing iOS 16 after the release of iOS 17? Is there a possibility that I won't be able to update, because Apple will stop signing it one day?

Do you own iPhone 8 on iOS 16.6? How old is your phone? Does it still have its original battery on board? Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm waiting for the iPhone 15 Pro Max release, too! I'm sure, we'll get used to FACE ID, just like everyone else did. And I wasn't getting a new iPhone all this time, because I really like my phone, I like its big IPS screen! What was your phone's original battery health when you've decided to replace it? Do you think I should install iOS 16.6 with the original battery on board?
LetteIT, as I noted earlier, I replaced my phone's battery in November of 2020 and currently enjoy a Maximum Capacity of 95%. My iPhone 8+'s battery capability played no part in my decision to upgrade to an iPhone 15 Pro Max.

It is my philosophy to maintain my iPhone 8+ at the highest version of iOS designed for it. This is why I am currently running iOS 16.7.1. I do this in order to have the best possible defense against outside malware. I imagine many iPhone users feel this way, too, and am grateful that Apple continues to provide updates for my phone.

Battery health is irrelevant if the phone isn’t updated.
It absolutely is. Batteries wear down and get worse with time. You literally singled out me saying his phone was slow and left out the context that his battery has never been replaced. You’re arguing in bad faith, to push your viewpoint that iOS 16 on an iPhone 8 isn’t feasible. Get a damn new battery, and it’ll be just fine.

Original iOS versions are too efficient for them to care about battery health. Grab an iPhone. Leave it on its original iOS version. Use it for years. Never replace a battery. Battery life will be fine.

People deny it because they don’t try it...

And I never argue in bad faith. I’m saying it’s far worse than iOS 11 and henceforth not worth updating. At this point, OP might as well keep it on iOS 11 and buy something newer.

Go with the last update for the release version - iOS 11.4.1

Now, since updating to that release is no longer possible, either keep it on the original iOS version and buy a new iPhone, or replace the battery then update to iOS 16.x and expect worse performance even after battery replacement... Also, AirDrop to me got worse on iOS 16.1.1 [China] and iOS 16.2 [rest of the world] due to the option Everyone for 10 minutes... Apple should allow more time limit options...

I currently have an iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 16.7 but I would downgrade it to iOS 13.7 if still possible... I also have an iPhone 14 Pro Max running iOS 16.7 but I would downgrade it to iOS 16.0/16.1.1 if possible just to get rid of the AirDrop time limit... I've heard about improvements to the camera brought about by iOS 17.x but I'm thinking of sticking with the software designed for iPhone 14 Pro Max which is iOS 16.x

I have an iPad 9 that was running iPadOS 15.6 RC then I decided to upgrade it to iPadOS 16.7 which was a decision I'm regretting due to AirDrop Everyone for 10 minutes limit... I should have updated it to iPadOS 15.7 and kept it on iPadOS 15.x instead...

I have an iPhone 7 Plus running iOS 15.6 RC but I would downgrade it to iOS 13.7 or even to iOS 10.3.3 due to I don't like the changes introduced by iOS 14.x and newer... I don't like having widgets on home screen by default as well as the app library feature...

For the best performance, keep it on the version designed for your device... For the most features possible, keep it on the latest available version with a hit on performance even after replacing the battery...

You’re giving quite controversial advice. First of all new iOS versions are not only about new features/changes and whether you like them or not, it’s your personal opinion. I am also not a huge fan of the latest iOS 16-17 features, and..? It’s also about important security updates and keeping apps up-to-date for at least compatibility and again security, as well as compatibility with the newest devices, e.g. newest AirPods or Apple Watch. Secondly, some iOS versions might have critical bugs that influence UX and it’s another reason to update to the newest version.
At the same time, I agree that performance is affected with updates every year, but is it really that much noticeable or you can’t use an iPhone because it’s extremely laggy? I don’t think so. Nevertheless, everyone decides for himself.
