I've been getting this problem for a couple years, I always had to make space on the phone so I could do the update on the phone instead of from iTunes, but this solves the problem.
Finally worked out that since the phone needs at least 4-6 GB free to do an update (as of iOS 15), else it fails to update with a lazy “unknown error” message (lazy as in could Apple really not just tell us how much free space the update will need), the least hassle way to update my phone, every single time, is use Storage to delete all the music, run the update on the phone then resync the music back on from iTunes. This has the added advantage of reloading the music files on from my PC so that any changes I’ve made to the music files, like adding lyrics, finally get sync’d onto the phone

Hi, you mean you were able to update your iDevice through iTunes because you had in your device 4-6 gb free?

No, I needed 4-6GB free to be able to do the update on the phone. If I update using iTunes on the PC I have to turn off the passcode (which means deleting my credit cards from the Wallet) to avoid the update failing with Error 4000. I then have to add my credit cards back to the Wallet after the update is complete, which is a PITA.
