If you shoot an Air you will probably just kill one of the little battery chamber things and the screen.

Still works when it's plugged in and in clamshell mode. ;)

Not to mention a MBP might slow down a bullet... but it'd cut through a Dell mini like butter, hehe

LOL it better cut right through it!! I wouldnt shed a tear I would probably throw a party!! But not if it was any of my Macs I think I would just die!!

I'd like to know how that whole thing went down
1: "Hey, you know what will be fun?"
2: "No, what?"
1: "Let's shoot this damn thing!"
2: "I like the way you think Achmed."

Wow, Achmed working for the Israeli Government... that'd be interesting in itself.

There is no cooling fan in the new MBA.

Along with everyone else, no reason to chance it with TSA. They can make you really miserable if they want to.

Last time I flew, I didn't take my CPAP machine out of my backpack and got a stern lecture. I had no idea. Machine got swabbed-down with wipes. My attitude is not to push it with guys who couldn't give a rip about whether I make my flight or not.

I suppose. I guess if it makes you feel more secure that I take out my "netbook" Macbook Air 11" then I'll do it just for you :) See, now THAT'S sarcasm, hehe

I remember when the first SSD MacBook Airs came out in early 2008 that a lot of TSA screeners were confused because no hard drive showed up on the X-Ray. There were reports of security questioning people because they thought it was a decoy for something more sinister.

Yeah, in 2008 I can understand that, SSD drives were just coming out. Today it's common-place, and they look at iPhone and iPad all day, so they know what to look for now.

To the OP....regarding taking it out for TSA....is it really worth the potential hassle by not taking it out? iPads are specifically listed as not needed to be taken out of a bag; however this summer I was ordered to remove mine from my backpack at the Manchester, New Hampshire airport. Upon my telling the TSA officer that it was needed, he told me that he wasn't aware of that, and to remove it anyway.

Point being....take it out, place it in the bin, and put it back in when you pass through. It isn't your call on whether or not it should be taken out.

That was good to know I have one of those types of bags for my Dell mini but I believe the MBA isnt going to fit in it. I am going to check right now though.

EDIT~ Nah have to wait for something it doesnt fit.

Settled... well... kinda.... lol... the "policy" is leave it in, but given the policy relies on their technical ability to know that it's not a "laptop" under the TSA guidelines means you may run into issues when you get the less-inteligent TSA reps... so 90% of the time, hah...

National security for $11 an hour... that's the TSA way... Keeping our skies safe one hassle at a time. "So redundant even the queen of england makes fun"...

FYI - ANY sleeve is "tsa friendly" .... there are TSA friendly\non-friendly bags, but a sleve with just one layer of material on top or beneath the laptop is fine.

ah I didn't realize that...I guess it makes sense. I just hate the thought of taking it out and having it bang around in a plastic bin.

What's different between an iPad and a Macbook Air?

Well, they're both technically a computer, but the iPad uses the iOS (toned down version of the OS X), and the MBA uses the normal OS X.

And the iPad is more of a mobile device.

I had to take my iPad out when I was at the airport - I had both the iPad and MBP with me, and I had them both out.

Not sure why people in this country feel the need to fear TSA. They're there to protect you against the people around you. They're trained to see items inside your bag that'll pose a security threat to you.

Taking your laptop out is recommended (nowhere does it say it's required), however you risk additional inspection if you don't. Just like with liquid, gels or aerosols, if they see them in quantities, and they happen to consider you a risk, they'll pull your bag.

The bottom line is the MB Air is so thin, they'll likely have no issue with it, but they very well could stop you with it.

EDIT: I went through TSA 6 times in the last 48 hours with my MBA 11" in my bag and never had any issue. The issue is when you have a laptop and a mess of cables. The XRAY makes it just like poking their head inside their bag. If everything is neat and tidy it'll likely be easy for them and they'll keep the line moving. It's the people who throw a mish-mash of cables into their bag and put it on the belt that they have to study and often times pull out.

By that logic your calculator has to be taken out. Your iPod is a dumbed down version of iOS so it has to be taken out. Oh, and don't forget that vibration device ladies... it has to be taken out because it's got moving parts!

At the end of the day everyone will have a different experience. The $11 an hour TSA gets might give them a sense of empowerment or authority in Knoxville... but in normal cities they generally realize that they're there to make sure no bombs nor guns get through, and in general terms those items stick out like a sore thumb, and the sole purpose of taking the laptop out stemmed from when they were so thick and so large that the xray had difficulties seeing through them.

The US has recently been called out by many other countries for having frivolous and old-fashioned security policies. Now that most major airports have full body scanners, there is absolutely no need to take off your shoes, but they don't retract that requirement... so like many things in the US, we say we want to be progressive, yet we act the same way as always.

Id rather take it out and know where it is rather than worry about anyone with sticky fingers....

You think it's less likely to disappear out of your bag than inside?!?! Are you borderline stupid?

If you can't keep track of your laptop, inside or outside of your bag in the 3.5 feet it travels on a conveyor belt, then you have serious issues to the point where you shouldn't be traveling. At least not on a flight I'm on, lol.
