Will we ever see a turn by turn GPS from Maps?

I have downloaded so many different gps but non work well. I live in Mexico City and it can be confusing...The iPhone´s Maps has the best routes and best reliable maps. I´m afraid I´ll crash one of these days by having to look at it!

I certainly hope so. I was very disappointed when they didn't update the iOS 5 Maps app.

Which apps did you try?

Try Waze which is free. Works very well for me and live traffic is also very good since it's user based.

Or use Navigon. Price a bit steep but well worth it.

There's also MapQuest (that's free) that actually does (fairly good) turn-by-turn directions too.

I'm sure one day, there will be turn-by-turn directions. I like how the Maps app now has alternate routes.

I love the maps too, but miss the turn by turn. Currently, I think the best thing now is MotionX GPS Drive. The menus are confusing, but once you get it going it works very well.

Thanks all! I tried Waze, but it is too new and the routes are terrible, they are still missing half of the city streets. Motion X was so hard that I couldn't re set it on the go. That is one thing I love about Maps, just hit edit, current location and you get a new route if you get off the original track, (which in Mexico City happens often). I also tried Nav free, Global Navigator and Iway. I´ll look Map Quest up!

Tried Mapquest but although it finds my street, when I look up another one, it gives me options in France or Spain, not Mexico!?

Probably not, but I have the tomtom and the Garmin (full map version) downloaded on my phone and they work great. The reason I prefer them over the 'theoretical maps' version everyone seems to want is I don't need internet or even cell service to use them. I also have a GoGoNavi Japan GPS app. When I bring my iPhone to Japan I turn of the "phone" portion and use it as an iPod and a GPS.

So yeah, turn-by-turn nav might be nice, I still need GPS apps with full maps downloaded already. (yes I don't need tomtom and garmin, but I am a garmin fan but tomtom released theirs first)

So here I am praising maps just to have gotten terribly lost yesterday because it would send me through wrong direction on one way streets! It marks the right circulation with arrows just to ask you to turn on the wrong way! Kept doing it even after editing route. :p. I think I'll wait for Tom Tom to upgrade to ios5 and will get it.

TomTom is ios5 compatible, they updated it just the other day. They just added ipad compatibility too. I like TomTom quite a bit for turn by turn and having on board maps. Have read about the traffic subs being hard to transfer, hope they improve on that. Myself I have never used their traffic.

MotionX GPS Drive!

I'd highly recommend MotionX GPS Drive! I've tried several different GPS apps and have found this to be by far the best and best part is that it's a one time purchase of $1! Can't beat that.

I have a feeling that iOS 6 will feature a major upgrade to Maps. It will integrate Find My Friends and Find my iPhone, as well as having some unique and awesome Apple-like interface that will blow away other navigation apps. And, of course, being integrated with Siri. This is just a feeling of course.

"Best" based on what criteria? Does it download map data or are maps stored locally? Info like this is important for people reading your recommendation. Don't assume that their preferences are identical to yours. For example, I strongly prefer locally stored maps and for others that do as well, I recommend TomTom & Navigon.

I agree with everything you said. I have both Navigon and TomTom but I prefer the Navigon interface to I use the Navigon app more. I have not used the TomTom app since their latest universal app update so that may change

You don't need to store maps locally. If you think you're going to lose data signal, then just pre-load the maps prior to leaving. Takes just a couple minutes to do and there's no need to bloat your phone with maps. I used to do this on my first iPhone, the regular 3G as it was slower to load the graphics once they did come in. Preloading them made it seamless.

The reason I really like it over the other apps is that ti's interface is clean yet sophisicated, easy to use, and it's fast as hell and very accurate. Includes traffic and all kinds of features.

I too highly recommend Motion X Drive. However, can't wait for Apple to license something and build a turn by turn system into the iPhone.

yeah, they all suck...the show maps app needs to be torn down and re-written...lose google if thats the problem! We need nav by now...its beyond about time! Especially with siri able to read the turn by turn...its a real wasted opportunity!

BTW, I paid for several GPS apps, including Navigon and they ALL SUCK! Thankfully I just bought a new car with gps built in.
