I was just about to post it too…Whoa!

Twitter just officially released their app for the BB as well.

I've also read a story, about one of Twitters' investors, who said that third party Twitter apps in the future will be toast and that they had better find a new source of revenue. He also mentioned that along with Twitter apps, it will also be the same for URL shorteners, twitter stats , photos and videos.

This is the next step in them doing this. Twitter is consolidating just as Apple has done with iAds.

You beat me to it. I was just going to post that this could spell the end for other Twitter apps like Echofon, Twitterriffic & TweetDeck. Not only does Tweetie have a stellar reputation, but now it's going to be offered for free. It's going to be nearly impossible for competitors to stay afloat. Shrewd move by Twitter and Loren, bad news for everyone else.

That's fantastic, I'm surprised at Twitter making such a great decision.

But good for them. Congrats Atebits.

wohoo i thought $3.00 was a lil high for a twitter app i havent even bought the other ones but still once its free this will be my main twitter app ive seen other people i know who have it looks great.;)

Congrats on shilling people out of money, Loren. Hope Twitter destroys your app like Brizzly killed Birdfeed.

LOL, I feel I got more than $3 out of the best Twitter client out there and Apple doesn't even allow for an upgrade price. How 'bout you?

Now the app and all updates will be free. Apparently free is too much a price to pay for some.

I'm so happy for Loren; his app is the best designed app for iPhone. He deserves this more than anyone. I've already congratulated him on twitter. :D

Two requests:

  1. Don't put ads in my paid versions of tweetie for iPhone/Mac
  2. Continue to support tweetie for Mac.

1. I actually like the ads for the Mac version of Twitter.
2. I agree.

As long as Twitterrific still works after this acquisition, congrats to Loren!

does that mean I won't be able to use tweetdeck on my mac and echofon on my ipod touch soon?

You can use them all for now…All of these apps will be dead in the future on on the mobile or desktop. Twitter is going to close these API's so they can increase their value.

Think of it as Apple doing the same on the iPhone OS. They have essentially shut off advertising on the iPhone OS with iAds.

EDIT: From here on out do not ever pay for a Twitter client.

For now yes. In the near future Twitter will not allow for any third party Twitter apps. TweetDeck on the Mac and iPhone will be gone. So will Echofone.

If you're thinking about buying a twitter app, don't. Twitter will cancel other apps and only allow you to download their official app which will be free.

Which i think is good there are Way to many twitter apps in the app store at the moment it will clear alot up and its kinda why I'm glad theres only one real good Facebook app at the moment.

I love Tweetie and it was worth every bit of the $6? I've paid in total.

I just wonder what this means for the Mac version - I've been patiently waiting for Tweetie 2 to come out which promised synching with the iPhone. And could this possibly mean Tweetie for Windows or would Tweetdeck (I presume) become "official"?

If I had to guess, TweetDeck won't be bought out. They bought Tweetie because of Loren. The idea of the scroll to the top and bottom to refresh has been used on two famous iPhone apps Reeder and Articles. They bought him for his creative talent and UI design. He also has worked at Apple.

On the Mac, Tweetie wasn't even updated to add lists so I'll guess it'll be there when Twitter launches their own official app. The same goes for the iPad.

You can bet Twitter are going to start ripping features out of it. I make TwitLonger, Tweetie was the first third party client to add support for it. Chances that Twitter will keep in a feature that allows you to post and read more than 140 characters? I'm assuming zero :(
