Is there anyone here who uses two iPads?
I have been torn with this generation of iPads.
I recently had the 11 inch pro and I loved it for reading books and surfing the web, and just holding it in the hand was perfect. The problem I had with it was when multitasking it always felt cramped. Two apps side by side always felt small. When I took it out of the house to use in a coffee shop it always felt too small. Also when using it around the house unless I was holding it in the hand the screen was a bit small.
I sold my 11’ inch iPad and planned on buying the 12.9. I figured that for every other use except on the couch it would be better. However I do worry about arm fatigue when I will use it on the couch.
I also got a loaner iPad mini until I get my new iPad. And this got me thinking: what if I use two iPads? The big 12.9 for on the desk, multitasking and media consumption, and the mini for reading books and in bed.

Is this crazy?
I have the mini with no extra cost so money is not a problem.

My use case:
iPad Air 4 - note taking with the Pencil on my desk, and general entertainment, internet consumption device around the home.
iPad Pro 12.9 - working when away from my desk or office and during travel

Great life!
I'm just happy with the 27" iMac on my desk, though.
Moving to 48" or 55" screen soon, less strand to my old eyes.
The bigger, the better, babe.

Yes, but there's more to the story:

I use a 3rd gen 12.9 512GB as my person device, but I have a 10.5 Pro from work, so while I technically have two, I don't think I would have necessarily purchased two sizes. The 10.5 (even though it's 4 years old) is still very quick but more importantly is much better for reading or tossing into a bag for reading on the go. The 12.9 is much better for editing photos, typing, multitasking, etc).

The older I get the more I prefer to minimize the number of devices I need to maintain (which is why I finally moved away from iMacs and laptops to just laptops with an external monitor).

I just ordered the 12.9 M1 512GB and MKB but will probably give the 3rd gen to a family member as it's still a very fast and fantastic device with lots of life left in it.

Same.

Air 4 for carrying around at work to meetings/take notes/watch YT in bed/stream radio. Chuck in my bag when in town.

12.9 for desk based work and around the house - I sit at the kitchen table/in my study a lot and do some audio stuff/podcasting. I don't tend to reach for it to throw in my bag to nip into town and buy a coffee. I do take it away on trips, if I'm mostly using my phone through the day, as I don't take a smaller iPad.

My 12.9 sits on the arm of the sofa and so no issue at all. Could you try that

Any place but here or there....
Yes. iPad Air 4 and now M1 SG 256gb 11” waiting for pick up notification. The M1 may help with Zoom meetings at work and I wanted double the memory for Procreate. Not ready to go 12.9” yet.

Plus, mom may want the Air at some point, we go back and forth with that. Currently, it’s no.

I currently have three iPads - and I'm probably about to add a fourth, so I can dedicate last year's 12.9" iPP to work and use the M1 12.9" iPP for personal use.

Other iPads are a 2018 iPad (given by work) in a chunky case - this is the one I use the most for teaching, because it doesn't belong to me and I can not worry about it being smashed. I use the 12.9" for note taking but only really when I'm non-contact or 1:1 with a student. I also have an iPad mini 5, though in honesty I don't use that as much any more. It was mostly used for being productive on the metro, but I drive now. It still comes in handy though because I have a very slim case on it - it's about half the weight and ¼ the volume of the iPad 6.

I could do without the mini though. I probably wouldn't look to replace it in the future. I'd prefer to give up the mini than the bigger screen of the 12.9", so make of that what you will.

so you don't use it in your hands?

almost never. It’s either in a case on the arm of the sofa or in my lap, or in bed I’ll rest it on the duvet propped up by my legs. Even if I’m using the pencil it’ll be resting on a surface or my lap

I use three. I have an iPP 10.5 that I don’t use all that much but it comes in handy from time to time. My daily drivers are a 2018 iPP 11 and Mini 5. I hope to pick up an iPP 11 today (or soon) and a friend will be getting my 10.5.

Personally I would likely find the 12.9 inch to cramped for multitasking as well. I definately do on my laptop, and use an external screen for these situations. If that is the majority of workflow, I would recommend a getting a different setup. I find the size of the 11ich as the perfect compromise between portability/couch surfing/and workspace - but your preferences might differ from mine.

However, If you choose the second iPad Strategy. I would recommend getting the ”budget” iPad instead of the mini for just Reading and couch surfing. Cheap, plenty powerful and you already know how much you enjoy that size, then you dont end up feeling cramped for size in this situation.

If you have the money for it. It’s not crazy if you can afford it. Maybe try saving some money first?

I have not purchase 12.9 to try but every time that I look at it seems quite large and little heavy. I have even gone as far as making a cardboard cutout to check out. Would be awesome for desk or tables. Not going to bash the size or anyone that loves them. Probably just not for me.

I did it for awhile. Bought the original iPad Pro 12.9" and really loved it but it was a bit cumbersome to fit in a small "girl backpack" for daily carry to/from work and traveling. When the 9.7" Pro came out, I bought that, and I kept both for about 4 months until I sold off the 12.9" Pro.

Upgraded to the 11" Pro 2018 when it came out and gave my dad my old 9.7" Pro that I think he's still using daily. I'm looking to go back to a 12.9" for awhile, but maybe not bring it along on short trips and/or stuff it into my laptop bag when I have to go into the office 2x a week. I'll sell my 11" if I end up with another 12.9", since they're at least "smaller" than the original form factor of the 12.9".

If they ever make a Mini that isn't ridiculous w/the bezels and looks more like the Pro screen, I'd be tempted to dual-wield again, and keep the 12.9" at home for digital art and travel with the Mini if it has Pencil 2 support (sold my old Pencil 1).

You do what works best for your own unique workflow, and what makes/ keeps you most productive. Nothing else matters.

I had both the 11" and 12.9" versions of the 2020 iPad pro. I was indecisive as well, so I just ended up with both. I found myself always reaching for the 11", even around the house. It was much easier to grab and use on the couch and stuff.

The problem was that after I grabbed it I found myself using it for a long time, and things would start to feel very cramped. I started trying to use the 12.9" more and more and got used to it, and really started to appreciate the bigger screen size.

When the 2021 ipad pros with the M1 were announced, I sold both of those and went with a 1TB 12.9 inch 2021 model. Just got it today, and I'm very happy with it. The screen really helped make my decision, but I'm much happier with just the one ipad now. I was tired of trying to keep my apps and such in sync between the two of them! Haha

I actually have 3 I use daily. My Main one is 2018 12.9", than 2018 11" at night, but I still use the bigger one for emails and browsing the web (I have a game and knitting app on 11", while watching tv).... Now I have added the mini - if they go full display I will definitely upgrade it as well. I primarily bought it (used) for taking notes at church, but find it so much easier to read on Kindle app at night without my glasses. Also I use it for short trips, it is so easy and lightweight to carry in my very small purse!!! If I have a longer outing, ie waiting at DR, I bring the bigger ones....

Soon, end of month, I have a 2021 12.9 coming. But my daughter will get one of the 2018 models, just not sure which one she will use for sure. She has been using the 11" for drawing lately. She does have an iPad though....
