I’m rocking the two iPad setup now. The 11” is a nice portable size that will be great for lounging on the couch, taking notes during virtual meetings, or throwing in my camera bag. The 12.9” is going to stay on the MKB for most of its life, because I just don’t need a laptop any more. Plus, I can rock an iPad at work and nobody will say anything. Bringing a personal laptop in to work raises a few eyebrows.

In 2017 I got my first iPP 12.9, and my idea was that it would replace my Air 2. I wanted it for working (I tutor prospective law students, mostly online) because I was all about getting an Apple Pencil and using that instead of a Wacom tablet with my MBP. I ended up really liking having two iPads and actually never used my MBP anymore. I ended up selling the MBP and went 2-ipad setup only (no laptop or desktop) for a couple years, and eventually I upgraded to 2018 in both the 11 and 12.9.

About a year ago, I decided to get a Mac mini because I wanted to be able to have more reference documents up side by side while teaching. I use the 11 inch in sidecar and still draw on the 12.9 for my online whiteboard several hours per day. I also use the 11 for throwing in my purse when I'm out and about. But in my house, the 12.9 gets the vast majority of the love. I play Civ VI on it obsessively and love the screen size. I don't find it cumbersome.

Yeah as of today i’m on 3, and trying to sell a 4th.
  • 2015 12.9 128: essentially a bedroom tv right now. sometimes i‘ll put it on an exercise machine for Fitness+ there’s a small scratch on the screen, doesn’t feel worth selling. maybe if i can get $250ish and if i‘m comfortable with using the new one like that.
  • 2018 11” 256: was my daily for noodling around with garageband/journaling/etc. now it’ll be primarily to travel around with and not worry about.
  • 2021 12.9 1tb: replacing the above and my laptop— i have a mac mini for a Plex server and some desktop-necessary work, but trying to go as far with this as a computer as i can. not expecting to upgrade for at least another three years, if the pattern holds.
  • 2019 ipad mini: trying to sell this. was planning on keeping this as travel device, but i didn’t do a lot of traveling in the past year+, and now essentially its role is being replaced with the 2018.

Is there anyone here who uses two iPads?

1x Pro 10.5, 1x Air 4: Practically mirrors. Primary device and EDC in purse. I use one when the other is charging. The Pro 10.5's battery is pretty much shot so normally, the Air 4 is the EDC and I just use the Pro 10.5 for nighttime reading.

2017 12.9 upgrading to 2021 12.9: Used when I need a bigger display. e.g. reading American comics with doublepage spreads, magazines, 3rd display for email, etc. at the office.

Got a couple more older models that I kept after upgrading but the above are what I use most.

I don’t have 2, but if they ever come out with that redesigned Mini 6 or Mini Pro, I am definitely getting it to compliment my 2021 12.9” iPad Pro. I’d love to have a more compact iPad to take around with me without worrying about messing up a $1,200 device.
