Two New Apple Pencils Reportedly Launching Next Year

Two new Apple Pencil models are in development for release alongside next-generation iPad Pro models next year, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Specifically, he said new versions of the lower-end Apple Pencil with a USB-C port and the higher-end Apple Pencil Pro are in the works.

Apple is working to satisfy upcoming EU requirements related to making batteries more replaceable, leading Gurman to believe that the new Apple Pencil models could be equipped with "new battery systems." While that wording is vague, it seems to suggest that the next Apple Pencil models could have replaceable batteries.

No other details were provided, so we do not know of any potential design changes or other new features that are planned at this time.

The current Apple Pencil with a USB-C port was released in November 2023, while the Apple Pencil Pro followed in May 2024.

I hope they discontinue the current pencils then. It's already the biggest mess as it is. Every time a relative gets an iPad, they send me screen shots of which pen to buy (not knowing which iPad model they bought either) 😭

Two new models is already 1 too many.

Of the 5 people in my direct, multigenerational family circle:
3 have given up on Apple Pencils when they got a new iPad and their existing pencil wasn't compatible.
1 has chosen a lower tier iPad than they wanted when upgrading so they could use their pencil.
1 doesn't use an iPad

That group includes a Desinger, an artist, an app developer, a post graduate college student, and a business director. Product compatibility completely ruined the pencil experience. Since there's widespread incompatibility, the differentiating features between generations or even the "low end model" and the pro are largely avoided.

What if an Apple Watch Ultra was only compatible with certain specific iPhone pros?

I buy the under-$20 no-brand pencils on Amazon. They work well if you are not doing actual drawings.

if they once again make it not work with older iPads then they are fools and this is one giant cluster, thats why I chip maxed the current generation of m4/m5 during the price hikes I just bite the bullet and moved us to m5 iPads pros and letting the older m1 and m4 go, and said we may never get another tablet from apple again at the price to usefulness ratio. I got a killer costco deal and thats it I am done, I love my iPad, but at the current price I am out, it was already a luxury to have, and now it is a luxury for m5 and up I am cutting...... so bye apple on the new pencil

I wish Apple would put some more work into getting developers to better support the Pencil features they’ve already introduced. The "Pencil Pro" with that squeezing barrel function came out two years ago. Most apps do nothing with it.

Procreate’s undo function is this two-fingered tap, it works for me about 80% of the time (lousy rate), mapping barrel squeeze to undo would be fantastic.

It's sad that we have to rely on the EU to force companies to make proper product design decisions. Thanks to them, Nintendo was forced to update the Switch 2 design to allow for more easily replaced batteries. Now it sounds like the EU is forcing Apple to design Apple Pencils with replaceable batteries. I'm here for it. My biggest complaint with Apple Pencil is the number of them that I've purchased because the batteries died. I eventually stopped buying them from Apple and turned to cheaper but still perfectly serviceable generic pencils from Amazon because the failure rate was out of control.

Same. Back when I played Pokemon Go we used those terrible rubber tipped stylus to play in the cold. Apple Pencil would be an enormous improvement.

I doubt I’d buy one just for iPhone. But including some basic iPhone functionality would probably sell me on the price for my iPad.

Exactly. I've got one for my iPad and love it, but sometimes when I'm using it I forgetfully try to tap on the iPhone. 🙂

I have a 2nd generation iPad Pro, 11" and whatever Apple Pencil that worked with that iPad. I have used it for years, the magnetic dock at the top works great for always having it available and for charging. My biggest issue, there are some strokes that only the finger works, such as swiping up to initially activate the iPad from sleep and it will not wake up a sleeping iPad by tapping it without going directly into the Notes app. the pencil is more precise than a finger, especially when trying to edit something.

I always feel this must just me in a minority of one. I have no real use for a pencil for my iPad. however as someone who loved my palm pilots and treos, id love to be able to use a pencil to scribble quick notes on my phone. I cant touch type quickly and apple's autocorrect is thick as ..., which means in work I take all notes with old fashioned pen and paper.

it just seems to me as a customer not an engineer or software writer, that one pencil should work with every iPhone and iPad.

Well, if you can write with your finger on an iPhone, I don't see why it can't be done with an updated pencil.
