Managed to get to an Apple Store today to try on an Ultra 2 (black). As pictured.

What I noticed the most though was the state the demo units were in.

Scratches and nick’s on the cases. Looked scruffy like the picture.

All these units just get tried on … hardly tough conditions.

Totally put me off buying one. The regular colour U2’s looked good though.

Left me pondering what to do but the U2 black is now off the list.

I wouldn’t worry about it. The demo versions are going to be used and abused by how many hundreds to eventually thousands of people, probably ending up being dropped a few times as well. I side graded from the silver ultra 2 to the black one and I don’t regret it for a second as the black looks so much nicer. Wonder why they never released it in the first place when the first one came out.

Oh!? I went to the apple store yesterday and the 2 black Ti U2 watches look perfectly new and no scratches and dents on the frame of the watch.

Like Radeon85 said, the watches on the apple store have been put through "excessive" abuse by customers test driving the watch and may be purposely damaging it. I don't think you need to worry about it unless you plan to do the same thing to your privately owned apple watch.

Someone on Reddit already posted he brushed the door with his watch and a huge scratch popped up showing the natural color underneath.

I mean I really like the black look, but there is no way its going to hold up to serious use. One bang on a door, one drop on some concrete and the black is going to be scratched to bare metal. That's true with anything that is coating in black.

Just checked out a demo unit at Apple SoHo. That one was still pretty pristine.

The one in the photo was at Regent St. London. Heaving with people today. Yesterday we walked past Covent Garden Apple Store at about 4.30pm. A queue of people snaking all the way around Covent Garden. I didn’t think the 16 series launch was a big one , but that queue was massive.

Anyways, have now finally decided to go with a Series 10 Titanium. Preferred the fit over the ultra but want / need the sapphire screen. Charge daily so battery a non issue.

The Ti series 10 are back ordered to mid to late October. I just ordered one, too.

I was pretty rough on my watch yesterday and it doesn’t have a mark on it. Played beach volleyball with it on for about 3 hours and it doesn’t have a mark on it.

Think it will be fine, you just be a little more careful. I do think the black is going to be a problem for some, 🤔 thinking back to how people were freaking out over the Ultra 1 getting microscopic scratches after a few days and taking micro lens shot….which is what it took to see them. All anodized and painted metal will patina over time - just look at the hardware on guitars. Don’t panic enjoy your watch!

If you feel around the top of the screen, there is kind of a sharper protective edge. Over time on the black my guess is you will start to see some of the metal through it. Don’t set the watch screen down, don’t wear it to change the head gasket in your car. Dont drop it on concrete, and you should be ok.

It's DLC coated.....

Better than the PVD on all the other watches.
It's still a coating. And while DLC is supposed to offer superior scratch resistance, you get a scratch and it cannot be repaired/polished out. I like to keep my gear immuculate, which for a watch is not realistic due to catching it in different surfaces.

My SS silver series 0 did pickup micro scratches over many years of wear but I could buff most of it away. I wear a G-Shock now so I'm free to bash it up without a care. A scratch on a black watch would trigger me. Personal preference.

The original shop photo above does show scratches, which after less than a week of customers trying it on - doesn't look great.

A lot of people buying this are new to DLC. It’s pretty common for a DLC watch to smack something and appear scuffed up, only for the reality to be that it was harder than what it hit. What you think is damage is actually residue from the thing you hit, since you damaged *it*, and you can clean it off.

As a sneakerhead, I see much hand-wringing from people fretting about getting creases in their Air Jordans. Watches and shoes are meant to be worn and enjoyed.

Jordans look better with some aging and wear, and patina or battle scars on the black U2 will probably be the same. Like that first scratch in a new car you hate to see it, but by god don’t let the prospect stop you from enjoying your gear!

Wear your watches (and shoes) in good health!

Yep, much tougher than the PVD coatings they've been using for the last few iterations.

There was uproar when Apple quietly switched from DLC to PVD for the black stainless watches.

I wonder if maybe this was also the case with the watch pictured at the top of this thread…

You employed logical fallacy in creating your statement “the U2 black is now off the list.” Reconsider your thinking process. How hundreds if not thousands of people (who didn’t necessarily need to care how the demo watches were handled) are not representative of you, unless you wish to project their mishandling onto yourself, which you have chosen to do.

When you drive on the road and see other cars with physical dents and scrapes caused by negligence or an accident going down the road do you say to yourself, ‘I would never buy that car because it has a dent(s) or scraped paint missing’ (caused by the owner or another person)? Such a conclusion is not practical or logical. And yet, you appear to be making the same argument about another physical item.

There is no evidence in place that states the scrapes and or nicks shown are due to a manufacturing defect of some kind.

More samples: Saw 4 black AWUs at Apple 14th Street, and all but one looked very good. The one that wasn't pristine had scuffs where the band meets the case. So potentially from people being careless when trying it on, slapping the band against the case.
