A lot of people buying this are new to DLC. It’s pretty common for a DLC watch to smack something and appear scuffed up, only for the reality to be that it was harder than what it hit. What you think is damage is actually residue from the thing you hit, since you damaged *it*, and you can clean it off.
But for a non-glossy finish like on the Ultra 2, the residue can be really difficult to be cleaned off depending on what it is. So at least visually, this has no difference from your watch being scratched, even though it may not be physically damaged.

A classic example is black coated aluminium gardening furniture getting white marks from clay pots.

Oh!? I went to the apple store yesterday and the 2 black Ti U2 watches look perfectly new and no scratches and dents on the frame of the watch.

Like Radeon85 said, the watches on the apple store have been put through "excessive" abuse by customers test driving the watch and may be purposely damaging it. I don't think you need to worry about it unless you plan to do the same thing to your privately owned apple watch.
Same here, even on a packed Sunday. The only time I saw the stainless steel Apple Watches scratched was the Apple Store inside Caesar’s palace Las Vegas. IMG_3359.jpeg IMG_3362.jpeg

people who use them don't have any care and why would they? they don't own it but pretty sure if you bought one you would look after it. never pay attention from what is in the store.

Yes ^^^^ that's the sharper edge of the crown that I think is going to take a beating. When the Ultra 1 came out, people were complaining about that in the first week. Its not noticeable on the natural TI, but on black any wear there is going to stick out. The material there is thin, and sticks out slightly to protect the screen, which it does well. The problem is by design that sharp lifted edge is what takes the wear....

I use a screen protector for exactly this reason.

Chase the Summit did an ok test on the AWU2 Black watch. Interesting he got a small "scratch" on it that he said appeared to go away the more he rubbed on it. This might be the DLC coating being harder than the surface it was dropped on and the watch picking up surface material, and not the watch itself being scratched.

Surprised not see more posts about scratches. They are all over Reddit on the crown just as I predicted.

Waiting for a black Ultra to arrive. My S7 still pristine look. Question:
Did or does someone protect his G-Shock, Fossil, Swatch, Breitling, Rolex or whatever expensive Watch?
My 14 PM never used in a case, condition nice, only the black Frame has countless small spots exposing the aluminum. My black 14 MBP has spots where the color coating is chipped. My car has countless small scratches you see in the sunlight. My beloved road bike - customized and optimized for insane money - looks exactly like you would expect a bike to look like after riding thousands of miles.
My super expensive Makita tools : drilling, screwing, still rock solid- while looking as dropped off the roof, right when some truck convoy were driving by.
Oh, finally: myself, that old dude, tattoos, scars and scuffs, like someone who lived his life.

Guys. Use your stuff. Don’t care. It is made to be used. What you see is patina and this is what makes things becoming really - your stuff. Every scratch, flaw, dent, crack - they can have a story you can tell or a moment you can remember, or just show: you use your stuff.
I like it, this is life, using stuff causes stuff looking used. Who cares? Don't be obsessed. Have fun with your gear. You can get it fixed or repaired, or replace it worst case. It is just stuff for use.

I freaked out the first dozen or so times I "scratched" my black Ultra 2.

Turns out I've been knocking dents all over my house walls, doorjambs, and whatever else I've accidentally caught it on.

It's a cool story if a scratch/dent is caused by a near death fall on Everest, or a high speed wipeout on a mountain bike trail. Not so much when banging on a kitchen cupboard door. 😄
