LTS stands for "Long Term (Time?) Supports".

hardy_splash.jpg

Hardy is supposed to replace 6.06LTS released two years ago.

download or request free Live/install CD at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download don't be surprised if you can get connected, too busy. (you can get torrents from here http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=04857)

Including Firefox 3.0B5, Gnome 2.22, Trasmission, Compiz 0.7.4, CUPS 1.3.7, gtk+ 2.12.9, OpenOffice 1.4.0, Python 2.5.2, inkscape 0.46, Pidgin 2.4.1

Supports AMDx64, i386, PPC(didn't see it on official website)

Gotta say, after tried it on my Mini, the most striking thing I observed is that ubuntu's font AA rendering is better than any other Linux distroes out there, and personally, I think it is competitive with OSX and windows, if not better than those two, especially with normal LCDs with less pixel density.

Windows users who don't want to disturb their OS and aren't satisfied with LiveCD's speed can use Wubi, which installs ubuntu 8.04 to a windows folder just like an app, and users can boot into ubuntu easily.

PS. 8.10 will be Intrepid ibex

Crap the 24th came so quickly. Once Service Pack 3 is out for XP I'm going to nuke my drive and then put Ubuntu on as well.

I have the last Beta already on chobimaru alongside XP Service Pack 2.

So can I use this Wubi program to install ubuntu on my vista partition on my MBP? It would be easier that way than having to edit partitions and try to triple boot my system.

To the best of my knowledge you can live edit your partition with Disk Management under Vista. Then you can install Ubuntu on the free space. After that GRUB should handle boot options after you select Windows in the EFI boot loader. You'll have to edit /etc/boot/menu.lst in Ubuntu to change the default boot option for GRUB.

I wish I had a desktop, but alas the space on my MB is not big enough to justifying installing Ubuntu, and I have no old computers around :(

As soon as they get a decent music player compatible with iPods (basically when Songbird is at 1.0), and a nice way to install apps found on the internet, I'll start trying to get my PC-friends who don't know much about computers to switch.

doesn't hurt to try, Wubi is an uninstallable app in windows, if it doesn't work, simply uninstall it

Wubi is not virtual machine
and Wubi does not need partition of the HDD, as I understand it....:)

I came here searching for a thread on this. I've always been interested in installing a version of Linux, specifically Ubuntu. Just because I keep hearing how great it is. Then I saw this was released today. I have a few questions:

1. what's so great about it?

2. I tried to do a partition for windows xp and bootcamp "half-assed it" as the mac genius told me. So I'm going to have to start over. Erase and install etc. What's the best way to go about getting this on my MBP? I'm not sure if I want a windows partition anymore(maybe I do maybe I don't depending on your input) Maybe I should just use parrallels. Do I make an Ubuntu partition? Or do i have to do a windows one and add on Ubuntu?

3. what is Xubuntu?

safest among all 3 major OSes as of now, free, more eye candy, thats all I can think of..for now:)

Bootcamp is better when used with fresh OSX, when you get too much stuff on the HDD, it has higher chance to fail, just as it did on my mini...

To fully enjoy it, you need bootcamp partition, just spend 5G on it, not a big deal. Parallels will be too slow and no 3D effects.

Read instructions here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro
Note its for 7.10, so any driver issue mentioned in that article might already been fixed automatically in 8.04. So 8.04 should be easier than 7.10.
3. what is Xubuntu?
Xubuntu is the same product with XFCE desktop environment instead of GNOME in ubuntu. lighter. however, Im sure most ppl has >512MB Ram by now.

Xubuntu and Ubuntu are both great, I'd recommend both. I second everything he says in this post.

From another thread you posted in:

Safe, huh? ;)

How is that relevant at all?

Why are you trying to start a flame war? Honestly.

nah, don't worry, Dejo is always picking on me... I need to be extra cautious so he won't discover my "flip flop" lol...:D

seriously. Mr. D

no OS is 100% safe all the time doesn't mean one can not be safer as of now. You read too much into a simple statement. Its not healthy :)

Just to clear this up, are there circulating viruses one could pick up for Ubuntu? If so, does the number pale in comparison to Windows so much that its hardly a problem?

such a nice thread, and you guys just want to lead it off just because of me?

No, I do not know if there are circulating viruses, or "concept" viruses out there for ubuntu, and so far I didn't see any report of either.

However, I do know Ubuntu was the sole machine who survived PWN2OWN contest :)

You can help to clear your own question up if you find any data or reliable report, please let me know your search result, would be interesting to see indeed. ;)

If you had said "safer" rather than "safe", I would have had no issue with your statement.
Indeed, I made a mistake, I am changing it now :)

stolen is a interesting word.
Last time I checked, a special effect mirror wasn't patented by APPL. Now, if you know they copied the code of photobooth, that would be a different story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_computer_viruses

There are a fair number of Linux viruses. More than for OS X, only because Linux has been around longer (I would assume). But still, compared to the thousands of viruses for Windows, you would truly have to be trying to infect your computer to get a virus with Ubuntu.

But also, as clevin pointed out, Ubuntu was also the only operating system (competing w/ Mac OS X and Windows) not to get hacked in the PWN2OWN contest.

So virus-wise, OS X is still marginally safer, but you probably won't ever get a virus on either one, anyway.

Security-wise, Ubuntu is probably going to be harder for a hacker to get you.

shoot, you've used every distro of Linux? And played with them all ?

props to you good sir

I've investigated a lot of distros. Tried a few out, seen screenshots of others. Most of them look the same as the rest using the same gui. Of course, if you're a hardcore poweruser you can customize it, but I've yet to find a customized gui that looks as good as OS X or Vista. I'll give Linux one thing: whenever someone knocks it you can always defend it with the classic: "you've used every distro of Linux?" Cuz there's always that one magic distro out there that is so uber it defeats any argument against Linux.

I like Ubuntu but it seems to only be real useful as a desktop OS as long as you don't have an ATI card. I really wish they would get some sense and start releasing some decent drivers like Nvidia has for a while now.

I'm sorry you're offended, but I find those ugly and not that much like Vista.

I'm not offended, maybe a little mystified right now though.
Sorry if I was unclear, but I meant those screens as examples of a unique good looking set up, not Vista clones; you already know what Vista looks like.
