I've been playing with it for a little bit in vmware. I'm somewhat impressed. I think its probably one of the most polished distros.

If you dig through their support pages, they have Macbook-specific drivers for trackpad, power, isight, keyboard, and all those goodies.

They've made great progress in putting together these support pages and instructions, but I think they still need to do work on having the GUI install "just work" on more hardware....

Yeah, I know- I was complaining both about the differences between the Unibody MBPs and the Classics as well as Ubuntu's overall feel. I'm not sure which was the more significant factor :p

Agreed, especially given that Mac hardware is now more common than ever, especially amongst those actually using Linux distros like Ubuntu.

Oh how I would love to switch to Ubuntu if music, movies, Netflix instant, external monitors and projectors, sleeping/hibernating, and MS office were available and/or always worked.

You can do those just fine sans Netflix because the Silverlight alternative is pretty bad. But that's not Ubuntu's fault. Music player? Look up Banshee, Rhythmbox, Amarok, Songbird, and Exaile.

Nice to see Ubuntu continually being updated. :)

Good alternative for Netbooks and other computers.

True.

The Mac OS provides a very nice operating environment, including Office. With Linux, you must use alternatives to Office, and depending on your needs can be sufficient or sadly lacking.

With Office 10, there will be Office Web apps and Office Mobile. Office Mobile, IMHO, will make the Linux platform a more viable alternative to Windows and the Mac OS.
