Why can't Mac Mail push the "read" status to the iPhone as a sort of push de-notification?

Why haven't they figured this out yet?

As far as Mac Mail updating automatically... Mac Mail uses the IDLE command to keep everything in sync with the server, and iOS Mail does not. It relies solely on refreshing or push notifications.

It's not a bug, unfortunately it's a deficiency in the protocol apple use for icloud.

it's absolutely correct that if you read in ios it will sync the read status to mac, but it will not do it the other way around.

read about it here

Thank you for this link.

I stand corrected.

@Mlrollin91 you were right all along.

P.S. I still think it's a ridiculous feature/design/whatever.

even if there are features of IMAP IDLE which make it inappropriate for use on mobile, i'm not sure why apple can't run some kind of hybrid system which would allow them to use their APNS for iCloud mail. e.g. run servers which translate IMAP IDLE commands to APNS push notifications to send to iOS devices.

oh, well. at least it works between multiple iOS DEVICES (as long as Push is set and I don't have Power Savings on).

No it doesn't. iOS to iOS works exactly the same way as Mac to iOS. Only iOS to Mac works the way the OP was referring to.

but I've always noticed notification badge clearing on one device (shortly after) once I've gone through my emails on the other device.

Well that's bizarre. iCloud email address? The support article clearly states that it will not. Maybe the app was running in the background on the second device?
