It snowing on the front range in Colorado today. I heard that Steamboat Springs has had 20” dropped on them so far.

I'd like to trade mother nature for father nature almost -20 Monday morning 33 on Wednesday and -12 this morning and 28 now.

Just pick one super cold or warmish and snow

Welp it's almost time to get the skis out! Love how the weather service kinda glides into it in the forecast...

Forecasters, generally droning on:

Today
Light snow likely before noon. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Saturday
Snow, mainly after 1pm. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Saturday Night
Snow heavy at times. New snow accumulation of around 14 inches.
Me: hello.

Forecasters resume, sneaking in the punchline that suggests the plow crews will be camping out overnight in the town sheds instead of going up to the hills and hollers of home where even a good truck gets stranded sometimes:

Sunday
Snow before 10am. Snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow after 1pm. [they spare us the lecture on how high the drifts]

:D that's how they are on this stuff, yada yada yada and then blam that phrase 14 inches jumps out. More fun to read the forecast discussion where they occasionally show a sense of humor in describing the arcane details of the manner in which Ma Nature plans to show us who's boss yet again.
Don't forget Monday when the temps drop 30 degrees.

Yeah that's the interesting part... quite a drop forecast here from 17ºF at storm's end. The forecast is -11ºF for both Sunday and Monday nights. Tack on another 8 or 10 degree drop for the higher elevations. That's the range when I start sleeping in my layered day clothes with parka, boots and car keys handy. The car becomes a portable house if necessary... not to go anywhere, just to warm up! Anyway going somewhere after big snowdumps is an iffy thing. The county plows 38 roads plus the circuits around two of the big reservoirs of the NYC water system, and they only have 16 plows. If you live on a county road that doesn't directly connect a couple towns then you could be waiting a while for your next road adventure. Barring power outages it becomes a cozy experience, nothing out there but single-file paths to the barns, marooned cars/trucks and the bird feeders!

This is the mildest winter in the 10 years I’ve lived here. But that doesn’t get winter off the hook. I still hate it!

Oh beautiful sun, it was great seeing you today.

We've had it pretty mild this year apart from rain. I've only had to light fireplaces a few times now compared to the last several years in addition to the forced heating. Not even a lick of morning frost on anything outside on some of our coldest mornings so far. It's usually a nice slide to the car in the mornings in years prior.

I just got off the phone with CA. Its 72 there now and will be tomorrow too. It looks like the soonest I can make the trip there will be sometime in March.

Yeah, I suspect more rain next month, quite possibly torrential levels much like a couple years ago if you recall. March should bring on cold winds that wind down to the sweet and often allergy inducing spring. I'm really happy Easter is at the tail end of April this year. Last time Easter was that late and actually warm was maybe 2009. Predictions are in for high 70s, low 80s with a nightly low of the low 60s. Which is honestly perfect all year round. Raise the humidity towards 70-80% and it's a bit like Hawaii in winter.

I was caught in some weather related traffic this afternoon. My 1 hour trip took about 2 1/2 because of a 20 car accident.

Sounds like a nasty snow to ice storm is coming, followed by a quick arctic blast.

Yep and they just bumped up the snow forecast in the central NY upstate areas... left the accumulation forecast at 13" overnight here but tacked on a forecast of 4" more during the day Sunday. Nice. Soon we'll have enough to last through February and can omit storms from that calendar?

Problem is as usual after these things we get 2 subzero nights followed by a boomerang into the high 30s, low 40s and then reversion to usual 10s, 20s. This is the recipe for how to lose unsuspecting deciduous trees planted in our yards to a cycle of a few winter flood-freeze flood-freeze gigs later in January.

But in the meantime it will look picture perfect anyway with all those evergreens against the snow in the mountains. Trick is to be able to get out of the house and up in the roads to take the photos! Hope local reporters are intrepid enough to do that
(safely) and park the pix on the front page of the paper later.

Looks like they are lowering our snow totals and upping the ice.

The thing that REALLY annoys me is that weather forecasters go bananas and the hype machine goes into overdrive on these storms. The predictions were topping 18" for the Boston area at one point and now its down to 2" We'll probably get something in the neighborhood of 4 but seriously. I purposely avoid watching the weather but you cannot help get caught up as so many people talking about it.

It's easier to go right to the source at the NWS, less hype and the most accurate forecasts. Plus they don't drive around in the storm looking like idiots.

My friends do say it's truly annoying what some of the cable shows do in amping up a storm forecast. About the only solution there is turn the thing off, I guess. Maybe a ratings dive would wake them up!

I still think I'd rather have it hyped than downplayed. If there's even a passing chance we're in for 12-20" rather than 4-6" then I'd like that heads up at least once, so I can least eyeball my household supplies and round up the snow shovels, brushes, de-icer...

Also I notice it's become more difficult to forecast the track of storms in the past few years, with odd shifts in what used to be more predictable scenarios. The clash of civilizations has nothing on new and not very improved clash of highs and lows in American weather patterns.

People here used to congratulate themselves on not having chosen to live in some midwestern tornado alley. That's before the occasional bout of straight line winds morphed over decades into what we now experience as the occasional tornado following a creek to a river to a reservoir, ending up ripping out flood control trees and turning them into matchsticks. Hello... tornado alley... goodbye complacency about the weather and where it can strike in any form.

I'm perfectly willing to celebrate later if some snow storm parked and dumped somewhere besides here. I can put that extra loaf of bread in the freezer.

I made a comment last week that they just posted their bread and beer alert. You would think people in New England have never dealt with snow before.

And I love how they send a reporter to show the plows loading up on salt. Can't they just take b-roll from 10 years ago.

On the other hand more and more people seem to be acting like idiots, or is it that the media show people acting like idiots, then watch their own shows and assume there are so many idiots out there that they have to point out to those repetitively televised idiots the pitfalls of stuff like not preparing for snowstorms and hurricanes?

Hmmm... how to break the cycle. Take the TVs to the landfill. :D

Still, when a weather forecast breaks from the models' trend and the new forecast is for 2" ice instead of 8" snow... we would expect them to let us know that. So they may repeat stuff too often but we still do want to know what's happening when the script changes.

The problem with this storm is as the storm moves closer to the coast it pulls in warmer air off the ocean. However the cold weather is still streaming in from the north at the low levels. So as this storm turns to rain in the clouds everything bellow 500 feet is still below freezing.

Yep and this could be really messy because of those conflicting impulses. From our regional forecast discussion, it's clear that the models are still struggling with it.

Foot plus snow totals are virtually a lock for almost all of Central New York, and indeed many places probably closer to a foot-and-a-half. If that heaviest band sits over a specific area long enough; perhaps in the vicinity of Watkins Glen-Ithaca-Cortland-Norwich-Hamilton-Waterville- Cooperstown, localized 20+ inches may occur.

Further south, enough warm air gets in aloft to cut back on
snow-to-liquid ratios including plenty of sleet and some
freezing rain. It should be noted that while the Wyoming Valley-Scranton areas may only end up with 4-7 inches, it will be dense in texture from a large proportion of sleet/ice. Thus a real pain to shovel or plow. Higher elevations of Northeast PA/Poconos will be more prone to achieving 7-12 inch snow amounts. Big impact however you slice it.

Well, yesterday it was 70° and today it's dropping to 45°, and tomorrow close to 32°. I just wish you people could keep your cold air up north! :p Not really, I revel in the cool weather in Texas. Such a nice break from baking and sweating.

I'm solidly in a swath of 16"-24" prediction for the storm, looks like the mixed precip is going to be too far South for me. My shovel awaits usage, the same one I've had since I moved to my place 11 years ago. My parents have their snow blower and generator at the ready. Have a full tank of gas in the car but I have no plans to travel during the storm.

Local public schools with campus facilities have declared their properties closed to help facilitate snow removal. At least one local TV station has extended regular broadcasts and canceled paid programming in favor of news coverage Sunday.

I'm debating bumping the heat some so if I do happen to lose power it has farther to go before it's uncomfortable.
