Yes I really hope they can use it at a local level for a missing child or person as I do believe it could save lives. It reminds me of the amber alert system in America where they can tell you a Childs abducted and the car and license plate on motorway signs.
There is no reason it can’t be deployed locally.

Makes me wonder if she on on Three - and their network finally delivered?

Also, if you happen to be off network when the alert goes out, even for a fraction of a second, do you entirely miss it? Or is there some sort of repeat mechanism built-in? Sort-of, the message is sent many times at intervals and includes "This is alert #0100" - if your device has already received #0100, it ignores the alert.
No she’s on Vodafone. I had a second alert myself yesterday at about 5pm. I’m on EE.

Yeah, I agree with this being available locally and for lost child alerts. It can be deployed locally. If you are interested in influencing the decision the government have a survey up with a few options for where you think it should be deployed and who should be able to use it (police, yep, local government, 🤔): https://surveys.publishing.service.gov.uk/s/a7xzxq

I got the alert, although a friend in the same room got it at 14:59, which a fair number of people seem to have got it at,

I'd completely missed that.

As with most surveys, some questions are pretty impossible to answer. Esp. the Q about how you'd react. Surely it all depends on what the message says! Nuclear war versus possible flood 50 miles away.

ha maybe we could use it for reporting benefit cheats.. Mr smith who is meant to be bed bound has just been cutting his grass!

Do you people really expect the government to use something like this to help the public? They are far more likely going to use it to spread fear porn as usual. If I couldn’t opt out, my phone would now be in the dustbin.

Whatever you believe about the government's intent, I for one would want to KNOW that they are using this alert system. Then I can ignore or whatever else. Turning it off means you won't know.

The lack of mirroring to Apple Watches that aren't cellular does seem an omission - if you left your phone in another room you could easily miss the alert, so watches in range of the phone would seem to make sense.

That's not how they are used in NYC at least and I bet they won't be used for that in the UK. The types of things that get sent are curfews (during the riots in 2020), notice of local terrorist attacks etc. In other words, stuff you really need to know to avoid harm so people pay attention to them.

Alert came through to my iPhone and Apple Watch - cellular is active on my AW so assume it was mirrored like some other OPs here.

Don’t know about anyone else but this doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Having a message come through over something that could either save someone’s life or reunite them with their missing child is great.

My iPhone was in another room at the time of the alert. It came though on my Apple Watch, very loudly. I got another alert on my Apple Watch about 20 minutes later.

Do I sense some sort of superiority complex by ignoring a national emergency alert?!

Bizarre!
