I'm going to Uni September 2007 - that will be brilliant when I get my MacBookPro.. I will be ordering it in about a years time though.. Yahooo!

I want more discount on education purchases now though.. Since I pay for them myself, or am I being greedy? :confused: :)
 
If you want the HE discount and you're not at a computer in your Uni, then go to nusonline.co.uk. Sign in to the site using your NUS number (the long 15 or 18 digit one) and then click on the Apple store link on the home page. Only when you've authenticated yourself as a student with your NUS number will the link work. And that takes you to the HE site with all the lovely cheap prices.

They wouldnt let me get it for that much, i only ordered mine on the 11th...about 3 days before 3yr warrenty was dished out to HE users :(

How annoying.
 
Does the deal extend to further education students? Only ask coz my daughter is at college for another year and is considering the 15" MacBook Pro at the moment. ( Funded by Bank of Dad of course ;) )

i believe it is possible to get discount so long as you are a member of the NUS, by logging onto the NUS website, and then you can enter your NUS number (so i am told), and then go shopping!

I can not confirm however, as I did this via my university network.
 
I simply logged into the NUS site with my log in details and then followed the link to the NUS version apple store.

very nice prices, (cheaper than the standard education store might i add!)

This may sound really bad, but after I realised it would cost £60 I thought sod it. :eek: This isn't entirely because I'm stingy :p , but is partly due to finding AppleCare pretty useless here in the UK in the past for me. Also, my boyfriend's new iBook has developed a fault, and my local Apple reseller in Bath (who are pretty dreadful overall at selling stuff, let alone fixing stuff) lying to him about when they'll phone, when they'll fix it and generally being pretty crappy. It's been 3 weeks so far and he still hasn't got it back. I just think - Nah, I'm not paying a penny for that. I'll take my chances, and if it means paying for something myself later I'll do that. :(
 
So....what exactly is the difference between the the "limited parts and labour" three year warranty that comes standard with all purchases through the HE Store, and the Applecare (which is sold for £60 with a Macbook)?

When I bought my Macbook this morning, I initially went with the Applecare for £60, but when someone informed me of the three years standard warranty, I subsequently phoned up and cancelled. Naturally, I thought I was being ripped off. However, some people are still forking out £60 (as this thread, and this thread seem to prove).

Basically, is it worth me phoning up again and asking them to give me £60 Applecare again? Or stick with the standard warranty?

Definatley not from a re-seller. I tried when i got my iMac last october and no joy. Had to log onto HE apple website via the uni network and get the best deal that way!

Applecare offers two components. There's the warranty on the hardware (that's the "parts and labor" thingie), and then there's also telephone support. In your case, what you are buying with applecare is the extra telephone support. Under Apple's standard warranty you are limited to 90 days of free telephone support. Applecare extends that to a total of 3 years.

One of the practical benefits of the extended telephone support would be free troubleshooting advice if you're having problems somewhere down the road.

Thanks! I did do a search, but didn't come across that thread somehow :confused: .

So...I gather that the warranty is the same as Applecare but without the phone support for the whole three years. However, can I still take my Macbook into the Apple Store and get one of the people at the technical support area to look at it? Living in London, I live 10 minutes away from a huge Apple Store, so I'd probably use that instead of phone support anyway (phone support is always rubbish - they never actually fix anything).
 
Can someone please explain to me how you're supposed to contact Apple to get them to fix your Mac under your statutory one-year guarantee, if you don't want to pay them so that you can inform them that it's broken, over the phone.

I found myself in that position a year or so ago, and ended up taking a day off work to go to the Apple Store Regent St, which I don't think I should have had to do.

Is there a way they'll do a return-to-base for you under the free one-year guarantee that comes with any hardware purchase in the UK?

I think that purchasing Applecare makes sense if you want to extend your guarantee (and the lucky Higher Ed guys don't have to do this any more anyway), but I would never part with money to be patronised by one of the Apple telephone support people.
 
For UK HE Students and Others:

To get cheap or free telephone support do the following:

Instead of calling Apple Computers (AppleCare) on 0870 8760753

Call 0207 1539000 to get Applestore, Regent St.

- Call them when they are open, choose option 2 & then transfer to Technical Support! This is the UK geographical number.

Use your free mobile/landline minutes or just normally call via landline etc to get cheap/free calls to Apple
