Another thing to try is to change the channel the router is on in the router setup menu. Sometimes that resolves wireless networking issues.

If you have a PC at home with a wireless card download inssider

In the UK there are 3 non overlapping channels 1, 7 & 13 if inssider shows two of them used set the wifi channel to the other on the AP.

Giving my iPad a static ID on my home network fixed all of my problems. To be honest it sounds like your settings are wrong, not the router or the iPad.

Given that the vast majority of users don't have wi-fi problems, I don't see you successfully arguing that the iPad is not fit for purpose.

I had an occasional dropout when using my home router, until Apple updated IOS, and now it's fine. I didn't have any problems with any other wi-fi access points though, so I am prepared to accept that the cause was the result of an unforeseen interaction between the iPad and my router. To be fair, it's impossible to test against every case, there are a lot of different chipsets and designs out there.

I think you need to ask yourself if you want the iPad. If you do, buy a cheap but modern access point and hook it into your Sky router. If not, then try getting a refund, but accept that you may need to pay a restocking fee.

I know it's not ideal, but I think it's the best outcome you can expect.

Everything the OP posted sound very much like the issues I was having with other kit on my network (not an iPad though).

I've had all kinds of issues with routers. I had what was supposed to be a good one that whenever I downloaded torrents via my MacPro, any other device connected would crawl to stop or loose connection. I had one that would lock up after about 10 minutes if my PS3 was connected.

Took me a long time to find a very fast router that would work well with 2 x iPhone, 2 x MacBookPro, 1 x MacPro, iPad and PS3 without any issues at all:

Netgear WNDR3700-100

Got a 16Gb USB dongle stuck in the back of it too for very quick file sharing anywhere on the network (even the PS3 can see that).

I'm having the same problems as the OP, wifi iPad on sky netgear router, is now getting to the point where it's almost unusable. My router is only 6 months old and supports N, I'm using WEP but can't change my settings really as it will ruin my VPN access for my work laptop.

I was hoping the OP might have come back with news of the new router but doesn't look good!

Sorry if this is badly written, posted on my iPhone as the iPad won't load :-/

I don't mean to scare you but WEP is really insecure these days (ie. cracked in seconds/minutes) and you would be well advised to move to WPA2 if at all possible. Any modern kit should be able to work with WPA2 so I'm not sure why your work VPN is an issue unless your work laptop is more than a few years old. WEP is better than an open network but not by much to be honest. WPA is better but can be theoretically cracked. WPA2 is currently the best way to keep your network secure as it uses a stronger encryption method than WPA.

This probably won't solve your iPad problem but who knows, maybe your neighbours are using your broadband connection!

The main thing to check is whether any of your neighbours' routers are using the same channel as you. This is quite common. Either use a WiFi scanner to check or just try moving your router to various different channels and see which works best.

Good luck!
:)

Thanks for the advice, and I am aware of the risks but as I said the work pcs have only recently moved to XP and are very locked down so my options are limited.

Back to the iPad, thought I'd try resetting my router... And for the hour since ive done it my connection has been perfect :) simples

I too use Sky as an ISP and the supplied Netgear router.

My iPad dropped a hell of a lot, to the point where I changed the security from WPA to WEP, as Apple suggested via the support page for iPad/WiFi.

Results are better but I still get the odd 'Safari could not open the page as the server has stopped responding'.

I've never felt the urge to return, as my past 2 iPhones have done this at some point, just never as bad as the iPad, and my iPad's WiFi works perfectly well everywhere else. However, I'm now at the level where I feel as though I should ring Sky and complain as I know this is more than likely their problem. And I don't like Rupert Murdoch.

Thought I would share a few things that may be of help...

I have an iPad and currently have no issues with my wifi. I understand that sometimes when it wakes from sleep if I havent used it in a few days that I might need to switch off wifi/reconnect, but thats the only hassle I have. I have assigned it a static IP now too, and connect over WPA2 on a channel which has no traffic other than my router (use a wifi analyzer on your phone.. plenty of them in the Android market.. not sure about iPhone App store)

The router I use currently is a Netgear DG834G... an old model (big silver one with B/G only). The reason I still use it is because its rock solid reliable. Ive updated the firmware in it, but otherwise its great.

Not too long ago though I purchased a newer smaller white Netgear DG834G ADSL 2+ B/G router... and nothing but problems.

Basically *some* devices would simply drop off the wifi. Not all, but my phone (an Android HTC hero) was affected badly. So was my iMac. But not my PC laptop or the PS3 !!?!@! The internet seemed to drop more too (putting that down to the very high speed the ADSL 2 connected at... too much for my line perhaps!)

In the end I gave up and went back to using the older DG834G Silver model. Not had a problem since. Download speed is a little slower but its rock solid stable.

So not all Netgear routers are built the same.
These SKY routers may have various levels of firmware and versions (just like their digiboxes which we all know have good/bad models etc)
