I got it to run 10.11 without any problem, but it's one weird thing, when I connect hard drives with lion system won't boot to El Capitan, so I can't format it :/
But still awesome machine, cant wait for all those parts :)

It's a shame Apple dropped support for it when they did as it's a very capable system.

For sure, I could use this in basic configuration but I want to make some upgrades and see how it works :)

can you boot from lion and do target startup disk? select your El cap disk and restart from there. I'm not even sure if you can do that in lion, though.

Hey guys, just got everything to work but I figured out that DVD Cover isn't closing. You know, I can open drive and close it without any problems but the metal cover keeps open :/ anyone have experience with that? I know Druaga1 had same problem on his Mac Pro :)

If it is not physically broken, just use WD40 from the inside on the hinges of the cover and move it a couple of times up and down while you there. Worked for me.

More updates :)
Rams arrived, working perfectly fine on El Capitan
Installed everything i need and it works like storm :)
Also, i bought a HD 5770 for 25$ with included shipping.
Cant wait for it :)

Slightly loosen the screws of the sliding drive cover from the inside and it should snap into place again.

Another update :)
So my HD 5770 finally arrived, I got it flashed using only Mac :) Here are some photos :)
By the way, light gaming (on windows) like League of Legends, CSGO, Minecraft are working perfectly with fps around 100-200. Still waiting for cpus :)

It's working like a charm :)
But I think I'll buy SSD, I had it for a while in El Capitan in this Mac and the difference was big :)

I have a problem, so today I booted into El Capitan, and using startup menu in settings I booted up into windows 10. Now I can't go back into MacOS even with windows disk removed from my Mac, can't even access Boot Menu. However, windows runs just fine.

EDIT: Its fixed, on windows i installed bootcamp and now i can go into OSX :)

Lol, nice fix. :)

I have 2 of these boxes, picked them up for my kids. (so they will leave my 5,1 alone) came with varying specs, but neither of them had the top spec cpus, which i bought pretty much straight away. lol also from China. :D

I also bought 32Gig of ram for them each, at a stupid ridiculous low ebay price. 20US with free shipping for each 32gig kit.. lol and then i had a varying array of video cards lying around, initially while testing went with a pc flashed 4780 1gb. which worked a treat, I also had 2 apple 570gtx's lying around so one of them is now the main card for my boys box. The girls one i still have to put together. one also had the sticking cover for the dvd drive. WD40 worked a treat. :D

Lastly i put a 180GB ssd in with a 1tb 7200rpm storage drive and thats pretty much it. Great box, as a matter of fact its been now my main box for the last 3 month while I've been putting it together.

hasn't missed a beat, runs like a champ and does Minecraft flawlessly..

very very good boxes these ones.

Small update and question, everything is running very fine but CPUs are still in shipping ;/
I wanted to give it some more power, will GTX 780 work in this machine? These cards are cheap right now, you can get one for like 100$ or so, even less than GTX 960, so is it worth it?

By the way, can you play games on this mac? You know, i have ryzen "gaming" rig but hey, its good to know :)
Only game that i play in free time is League Of Legends, if you can check that out it will be amazing, its hard to find some "gamin" videos with mac pro 2,1 on youtube :)
Yes, you can. But you need the best graphics card you can afford. Most games perform better under BootCamp on Windows .

Sorry for late reply, I already installed bootcamp with some games on it.
So ya, CPUs will arrive on days so here comes another question, how long torx or 3mm hex I'll need? I searched the web and results are very different, from 6" all the way up to 12" so that's big difference. Any one knows how it's exactly need to be?

Just yesterday, I installed the new Star Wars Battlefront II game that came out about a month ago, under Windows 7 Bootcamp, of course. I figured I’d try since it was on a great sale on Origin and if it wasn’t playable, I would just get a refund.

Amazingly, my 2,1 with x5365, 16gb Ram, and 7950 (with latest drivers) can run it on high settings at a steady 40-45fps at full 1680x1050 resolution on my Cinema Display. This is a brand new AAA title being played perfectly smoothly on an over 10 year old computer (I got it as 2.66 1,1 in 2007 and upgraded it a lot over the years).

So yes, I’d say it’s definitely capable of some modern gaming, under Windows, as long as the game is well optimized.

Small update, screwdriver should arrive tomorrow, can't wait :) But even now (I put 1050 ti in my Mac) it's capable of running GTA V on 1050p with like 45fps :)
So that's nice for a nearly 12 year old computer :)

bob93329 - Do you have a 1050ti running in your Mac Pro 2.1 with 10.11? I thought the 10xx Nvidia drivers only supported Sierra or higher.
