But isn’t that exactly what I did? I’ve sent an email to the “hide my email” address from another account, then replied to it. So I simulated the company by my other email account.

If that’s not what I ought to test, then I obviously do not understand your issue.

I have the same problem. I contacted Apple support. They advised that they are aware of this issue and investigating it. In the meantime, workaround is to use iCloud Mail.

I've spent a day "farting" around with this as I'm not able to reply to an email that was generated with a "Sign in with Apple" third party app. I get the email, can send a reply, but the reply is not received. I hope they fix this.

BTW: I can generate a new email with a HME address (@icloud.com), send it to a third party, and the third-party can reply and I receive no problem, but it doesn't work with the above using a @privaterelay.appleid.com email

This is definitely broken for me as well.

a land far, far away...
Well, it's odd that the error message you received talked about @privaterelay.appleid.com

All the headers from addresses I've sent and received include @icloud.com and lines like "Received: from st4xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.me.com (st4xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.me.com"

I don't think that "the relay address" (whatever@privaterelay.appleid.com) is the same as a whatever@icloud.com or whatever@me.com address.

Are you using Mail.app under Monterey?

If so what happens if you send to your other address using a new, randomly generated "Hide my email" address, then reply to that mail from your own address back to the new "Hide my email" address?

OK, this is an old thread but I just came across this article which clears up the @privaterelay.appleid.com V @icloud.com confusion:

You may notice two types of addresses in this list. The ones ending in @icloud.com are Hide My Email addresses; the ones that end in @privaterelay.appleid.com are Sign in with Apple addresses. Apple introduced the latter service first, as a privacy-respecting way to create accounts with sites and services that support signing in with your Apple ID. Sign in with Apple uses the same back end as Hide My Email, and it also lets you have a unique forwarding address for each website or service.

HTH.

Thanks. Turned out that the forward address was not configured in Mail, because it’s an alias. I added it, and then everything worked.

Well, yes, but still I’d expect that emails sent to those addresses should be forwarded to my mail account, too, shouldn’t they? Otherwise I wouldn’t know what they’re here for.
Hi Tricia

I am having exact same problem as you. I do not understand your solution. Can you please give more detailed instructions on how you fixed this for your "Hide My Email" address?

Thank you so much!

I wasn’t able to fix it. However, the problem didn’t reappear with new „Hide my email“ addresses, so I stopped investing more time in this issue.

I’m sorry I can’t help you.

I have exact same problem as described.
1. I send an email to a company and use hide my email, so they don't receive my personal iCloud email address. (using Mac mail macOS 12.5.1)
2. the company replies and the mail is in my mailbox.
3. I want to reply to the mail the company send me to my hide my email address
4. I receive an error message that the email address no longer exists.
5. I have to reply with my personal iCloud address, or create a new mail, copy paste the other mail and use new hide my email address.
This makes no sense at all, and is making the hide my email address unuseful to me

searched the net, but can't find a solution

Bumping to see if anyone has figured out a way to reply with a @privaterelay.appleid.com email as I am still experiencing this problem.
