Having used the Max for a month, my conclusion is Face ID is an awful experience.

It's slow compared to Touch ID, you have to physically lift the phone to use it, then swipe it again... ugh. I love the Max, but Face ID is by far its worst feature. It's just horrible.

I strongly suspect that Touch ID will be added if it can exist alongside Face ID, from within the screen. I hope so, anyway. The technology honestly feels like a step backwards.

It works instantly each & everything for me.

& no, touchid won't be coming back. The macbook's may have just gotten them but mobile wise it's history.

Touch ID is nonexistent and isn’t coming back. Apple made it clear that Face ID is there future, and Apple really is about choice when it comes to biometric security, it’s either ‘one or the other’. I think they made that clear during their past few keynotes.

It’s not though. Face ID is far more secure over touch ID, and is the only biometric security form that actually uses 3D facial mapping, where the competition is using 2D.

And yet they added Touch ID on the new MacBook Air over Face ID, a much more expensive device than the iPad.

I was dubious of it, but the thing works great on my XR. I don't even have to be looking at it for it to work.

They probably used TouchID in the laptop because they had more room for it. Both TouchID and the headphone jack were removed to make room for things like a bigger battery and/or screen in the phones and now tablets.

Doesn't matter to me at this point. I'm fine with Touch ID and would probably embrace Face ID with open arms if I wasn't forced to look at a hideous notch in return. I'll feel much better about it next year if in fact the notch is smaller or gone completely.

Yeah I remember when Apple was passing out that koolaid at the keynote last year. What was it? 50,000 more times secure than Touch ID right? Where did they pull that number from exactly?

Either security method works. The day someone breaks into my phone with a fingerprint that isn't mine will be the day I lose faith in Touch ID.

Any idea what the compromise rate for TouchID is in terms of security?

You'll have to ask Apple. I'm sure they'll pull a number out of their collective arses like they did at the keynote last year when they were pitching Face ID.

FaceID works so well, it's like my phone never locks. I don't even see the notch. Having to touch a sensor on my 6s or IPA2 seems laborious.

Got my new iphone XS yesterday. I like it EXCEPT, I seem to be having an issue with Face ID. At first, it did not seem to work with opening the phone. After resetting Face ID several times, and using the alternate ID as well, it seems to be working better today at opening the phone.

Where it has yet to work is on any of the Apps I use. For instance, I use 1Password. I'm having to type my main password in because Face ID will not open it. Several other Apps are the same, won't open with Face ID. Just used Apple Pay, and it didn't open with Face ID either. I'm wondering if anyone else has the issue?

If I don't get this resolved I may have to return the phone.
On my XS Max, I also have passcode activated with Face I.D. When I raise my phone, it will prompt me to enter my passcode. When I deactivate passcode, it also deactivates Face I.D.

I was under the impression if Face I.D. recognizes my face, it would not ask me for passcode. It kept asking me to enter passcode numerous time with Face ID active.

Face ID will come for iMacs & MacBooks next year...

They would have been stupid to launch Face ID on MacBook with the Air... That's something for a top tier product like a MacBook Pro (including a price increase). 1-2 years later it will come to the "Air" if it still exists.
That's the way they're making money :)

In theory, we don’t know what Apple has planned for the MacBook in terms of Face ID, but they made it blatantly obvious that the iPad and iPhone of the future for Face ID. We can’t rule out that the MacBook will eventually adopt face ID in some form or another either. But one thing we know for sure, Tim Cook stated Face ID _is _ Apples biometric future of security.
