I appreciate its a Beta and you all don't need to remind me.

but I would have thought that Beta 1 would have been not complete - just enough to show off at WWDC - but I would have hoped Beta 2 was almost a working copy.

Seems not...

Very Disappointed.

Not expecting big things in Beta 3...

Welcome to Apple's "beta". Like every year, we use to joke that the first actual beta is the GM that's released in September/October.
Yeah I wouldn’t expect that to be the truth but would have thought beta 2 would be a bit more solid ... not perfect but a bit more solid !

June/July/August is like this every year. It's a rollercoaster, waiting to see which features get delivered and what existing apps break with each new Beta. Such fun!

Historically not true. The betas don’t be necessarily get better as they go on as they withhold a lot of OS features with the first one to get a feel for general app compatibility and then add more OS features as they go on. It’s not unusual performance gets worse with betas after the first iteration and then gets better again.

Not an issue if you’re just using it to test your apps. Regardless of how “stable” they may appear, you’re always risking disappointment if you install a beta with the idea of getting a sneak preview of the newest OS.

Public Beta 2 is probably my point of entry.

I'd wait, but I like to dig into SwiftUI and some of the nice interactivity demands Catalina, even if Xcode 11 beta install fine on Mojave.

There is no rule that betas have to suck. In a perfect world betas would improve on what comes before, and that includes stability and usability. But that is not to be. Anyway, because of the dropping of anything 32 bit, this is of course bound to be messier than usual.

"Very disappointed ", yeah, that tells us a lot. What the issue? Are you reporting them back to Apple?

It is pretty much a working copy. Very stable and extremely few issues.

It’s just a developer beta, of course many might have issues.
Probably best for you to wait for at least the public beta, if not that, the general release in September.

Word on the street is that Beta 2 is very disappointed in you
And Beta 3 has already made it known in advance they are not expecting big things from you

Sorry? Maybe less personal attacks and more constructive posts? Admins ? Do I have to put up with this sort of response?

I understand that's it a beta - not sure why everyone feels it necessary to keep reminding me. and yes I have reported it.

But how can I develop or product software when the basic software doesn't even work.

That's the thing with Betas, its released to developers who need to start testing their apps. The upside is, that it also allows apple to vet out bugs and other issues. You may be very disappointed but its doubtful that you're needing to run the beta and just wanted to play with it.

Since its a beta and very early on at that, you need to accept that there are bugs and things that don't work. If that's something you do not want to, or cannot deal with then reload Mojave (or what ever version of macos you had).

That's a nice detailed post, explaining the reasoning behind your thoughts....... [/Sarcasm]

I've having minimal issues with it, pretty much everything I use is working fine, bar 2 app, 1 of which will require the developers behind it to update their app.

I completely see your point here. Does create quite a problem and doesn’t make sense.
Doing it like this really turns the devs into OS testers in general instead of being able to test their app software.
A devs could easily spend a lot of time getting an app to work on this beta just to have it broken by changers in future betas.

but Beta 2's are typically only 2 weeks after placing beta 1 into the hands of "who knows" how many people, and then how many bugs are being reported over that 2 weeks and then the order of which those are to be fixed, and then fixed, while continuing to work on fine tuning features outside of bug work.

I would suggest that is a high level of expectation for a product that has not, in my memory of the last decade or so, been able to deliver on that expectation in that time frame.

There are, usually, like 7-8 betas and you assumed beta 2 would be “an almost working copy”? Talk about high expectations :)

If beta 2 is supposed to be an almost working copy, then what do you think they do for the next 2 months? A little bit of polishing?

I am more specifically talking about the bread and butter things like mail, ICLOUD, Time Machine to name a few... the super flash stuff - that I understand needs polishing - but seriously - the normal things...

Cmon… Beta 3 - where are you?

In my experience, it's always been sort of a sawtooth experience... a couple of steps forward, and one step back... the evolution is moving in the right direction, but it's not always a linear experience... in fact, it rarely is... it's the beta way. And that's why Apple warns that it's not an "early release" process, but truly a "beta" process, and the overall intent is to allow developers to test THEIR apps using the coming OS - but some folks just don't seem to be able to grasp that concept.

It’s been widely discussed in the dev community that these are the roughest betas we’ve seen in a while. So the observation isn’t unfounded but the criticism still is.

Did you decide to hold out for Beta 3? I'm definitely in the same boat as you... these are developer betas, for developers to test their apps. How are we supposed to test our apps when the core functions needed to test them are broken? People can say it's a beta all they want, but the core functions should at least work to some degree. We're not on Alpha builds. When I try to open a file in any application it crashes because my file provider service is bugged out.

Edit: Apple acknowledged my bug reports about Finder recently, so it appears we’re on track for a fix.

You need too reminded every now and again so you don't come back crying because of beta problems and also to prevent you from being disappointed and spray you negative energy all over the place, regards

The people responding with "its a beta" are probably not developers.
