It's not a very good watch either way, the only people that buy it are the ones that want to feel and show they're different, rather than for it's capability
Actually it's a pretty good watch, the old chipset being the only drag on it, battery life is only so-so (version 2 is fixing that). Performance is better than it should be with that chip and it's more than capable relative to any smartwatch. I do wish it was a little bigger but all-in-all, it looks way better than any Apple Watch too (IMO, of course). I prefer a round watch that looks a watch, couldn't go back to an Apple Watch at this point even if I wanted to.

If you’re interested in the whole story I don’t think you can just ignore the fact that while replacement options/costs may be egregious on both Apple’s and Google’s part - at least the old Apple Watches that are turned in get parted out and reused. The Pixel just…gets thrown into the ocean?

Yes, but when you take your Apple Watch in you erase it and send it in, they don’t fix it at the Apple Store (I worked there), I’m positive 9 times out of 10 you get back a refurbished. And the price is essentially a new one. That’s why we pushed customer to just get a new one instead of wasting their time.
Right--I think that's been the case ever since they started gluing everything together. But I'm saying when a Watch or anything else needs to be replaced they don't just trash the old one like Google seems to be doing.

At the prices Apple charges for repairs it’s pretty much pointless. You can probably sell your broken watch on eBay, put that money towards buying a new one (possibly with discounts that tend to become available some time after initial product release), and come out cheaper than paying Apple the repair fee. Especially if your broken watch isn‘t the current generation. Previous generations can be bought at pretty good discounts, or you pay a little more but end up with a newer generation vs having Apple repair your previous gen watch.

I did not purchase AppleCare for my Ultra 2 based on the fact that it’s nearly impossible to break.

Amazon sells it for $400. Not disposable level pricing.

The pricing depends on where you buy it. It's $300 for WiFi and $340 for Cellular through the official Google Store:

Even on Amazon, it depends on the color and connectivity:

The pricing, especially for LTE, is quite competitive compared to Apple ($400 41mm WiFi Aluminum, $500 41mm Cellular Aluminum ):

Also, Google was giving these away for free (even LTE version) when the Pixel Fold came out and I can't remember if they were doing the same when the 7 Pro came out.

I bought a Pixel 7 Pro last year and I've been super happy with my experience. I was on the iPhone 11 Pro prior to that. The only reason I still have my iPhone is because of my AW S7. It's the only one that allows me to store music without having to go through Spotify or Tidal. If Google allowed direct storing of music without 3rd party apps, for my use case (music at the gym / fitness tracking), I would switch.

And yet, a pixel watch sells from google starting at €379 (or at €292 from third party resellers), while apple cites €369 or more for a watch "repair" (a.k.a. replacement).

Still not throwaway pricing. Apparently Google isn't that serious about the watch if they're giving it away. Apple seems much more serious in their development of the watch and I think that gives it extra value. Google could drop this product in a minute because it's not really a core product. Much different situation with the Apple watch.

Giving away a $350 to $400 retail price watch at the launch (pre-orders) of a $1,800+ phone does not mean they aren't serious about the watch. Apple has done plenty of giveaways over the years too.

I was burned once by google, when I bought their Galaxy Nexus only to stop receiving software updates after a year and a half. Never again will I buy from google.

They have a less than stellar record with the products and the way they treat customers, I don’t know why people keep buying from them.

Apple doesn’t repair them either. Cracked screens, liquid damage, hardware failure, battery.. all replaced. Sometimes a software issue can be resolved at the repair center, but, Apple just sends you a replacement watch.

Apple doesn’t even service watches in store, either. The Apple Store just intakes the watch and mails it to the offsite repair facility if they can’t resolve the software issue in store.
