iPhone 3GS Jailbroken but won't unlock

Hi,

I have successfully updated my phone with the stock version of IOS 5 (I hear now that I shouldn't have used a stock version).

Cydia is installed and I download Ultrasn0w 1.2.4. When I go to unlock it, it fails.

Now I have a 3GS iPod Touch.

How do I get fix this?

Thanks

Eric

tiny will not kick me out of recovery for step 10 any ideas? it keeps popping right back up in iTunes

downgrade or upgrade should not be a problem as long as you're using older iTunes version.

recently, Apple seems to have changed iTunes policy to not allow installing older firmwares after a certain time-frame just like saving SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella is not possible once Apple stop signing older firmwares (after a certain time-frame)

+1

if you keep receiving error and getting never ending sad result "USB + iTunes" logo, consider this :

- get older version iTunes : http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php
iOS 4.1 was released on september 2010, so if you use iTunes 10, you'll be golden

- make sure you use Redsnow 0.9.6RC18, not the newest one. you can get from here : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N73VEAF4

hope it helps.

You need to flash the iPad baseband onto your iPhone - using redsn0w. Read the steps at the start of this thread on how to do so.

Stuck on emergency Mode

Ok Guy

I got to step 20. After my phone rebooted it went into emergency Mode.

I don't know what do from here, I have tried booting the phone in DFU but it won't do that, I have looked and look in the forum but just can't find anything.
I have tried installing the ipsw again using Itunes and keep getting error 3194.
I don't know what more I can try now.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

Will this guide work for a 3G on 4.2.1?

OK, I resolved the above problem by switching to Windows computer and using lower version of ITunes and now I have completed all the steps up to installing iPad baseband, but I have tried to use my 3GS with AT&T card and I get searching at first and then No service. My current IOS is 4.1 with BB 5.16.05 Cydia and ultrasn0w are installed. Shouldn't my AT&T card work at this point?

...
Here are the facts:

- iPhone 3GS
- BB 05.16.02
- iOS 4.3.5
- locked to O2
- iPhone is not currently JailBroken but happy to do so.

I've done a fair bit of research and as far as I can tell it is impossible to unlock an iPhone with these settings without changing either the iOS (downgrade) or the BB (update)? However...

I have installed TinyUmbrella and I have no SHSH blobs saved which I think potentially rules out one or both of these options. Is there any solution still possible?
...
...

Yesterday I got an iPhone 3GS with this same set up from the apple store after they swapped out my own one under AppleCare. I've already moved onto the 4s, I just wanted the phone looked at one more time before I sold it to make sure I didn't have any issues.

Anyways, I thought I'd look online to see if the FIrmware/version and modem/baseband was unlock-able so I could mention it in the ad. Seems from this thread that it is but the iPad Baseband is pretty complicated to install and there are potential trade offs.

....

Its also worth noting that some iPhones sent from ATT are refurbished and may have had their previous firmware's used SHSH blobs saved on cydia prior to a 4.3.5 upgrade from apple care or whatever apple/ATT or authorized MVNO that may have upgraded them.

What exactly would this mean ? If there are SHSH blobs saved from earlier then a different (and I assume better) route to unlocking can take place? To check this is just install tinyumbrella on my Mac and connect the phone and the app does the rest right?

!!!!!!!Attention 3GS iphone owners!!!!!!!!!

Please read all of this before attempting any of it.

Please forgive me if this is a bunch of repeat stuff you know already.

If your OUT of warranty and cant take your 3gs to an apple store. If you are in warranty , stop reading and go to the Apple store!!!

If you've updated to 5.x+ and your 3gs "sim card will not authorize" and your perfectly working iphone now only makes emergency calls.

Your most likely going to have to jail break and unlock your device.

If you have a mac osx 10.5.x + (what I used to accomplish this)

First go to http://www.iclarified.com and READ STUFF

If after you read at iClarified and you find in your situation your totally f'd cause Apple+Att = ********** Richard-Head Money Hungry Pocket R*p*sts! like I did. OR if you just want to jail break and/or unlock your i Phone.

If you know someone (yourself? friend) mechanically inclined and able to fallow precise instruction who is also able to download, run, and use mac osx apps. (All apps needed to do this are completely free, if your paying your getting ripped off!)

First

After you've read a little and familiarized yourself with the terminology and basic idea behind Jail breaking and unlocking an iphone. A successful jail break and unlock may take you 10 mins and could take you a whole day to get working properly due to all the variables. Allow yourself a whole day so you dont forget the steps youve taken, if you get done early go do something fun.

Actually FIRST (very important)

START A NEW USER FOR YOUR MAC. Ive read sometimes this is all you need to do. plug the iphone run itunes and boom, fixed. If a new user doesn't fix it, you may need to go as far as dl an older version of itunes, and you dont want to do that on your main user setup, you could lose your music and make for an even bigger head ache.

START A NEW USER for your mac. Make a folder on the desktop called iPhone and save everything you dl in this folder. just makes life easier.

Download the latest version of Tiny Umbrella

Run TU and Save your shsh blobs!!!! (very important)

Go back to http://www.iclarified.com to see if your lucky enough to have the matching firm and bb and blobs to fallow one of their tutorials and that should work fine for you.

but if you cant find the bb, blob or firm combo that you need on iClarified, or if you cant find the BB or firm info about your iphone cause its locked you need to try this next step.

Before running anything other than TU.

Try to make an emergency call of 999, it should say "call failed" and have a "call back" option, keep pushing "call back", as if you were playing a game earning points to win, and eventually (try and try again) a home screen should flash and pop up, boom, your in! go to settings/gears and change the auto-lock time to never, then goto "About" and find your serial, firm, bb, everything you need to know, COPY ALL THIS INFO DOWN, YOU WILL NEED IT!

If you have tried one of the tutorials on iClarified or have ran into trouble or have confused yourself. if you can't turn on your phone or if you CAN NOT GET OUT OF DFU or if you have a WHITE SCREEN. Try all the steps of what you did, again and again, i say 5-10 times because Ive read this works for many people. But if you tried for 5 days and are still stuck on a white screen or dfu recovery loop (like I was) then you need to disconnect the battery from the logic board for 30mins or let your battery completely die (5-14days) to let the logic board reset and this allows a sort of start-over opportunity . I didn't have 14 days to wait so I fallowed these instructions (my model was a little different than in the pic but close enough to get the right screws out)

SKIP SKIP SKIP STEP 8!! its unnecessary.
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone-3GS-Teardown/817/1

After I took it apart I jammed on guitar for an hour or so then i put it back together.

And then I fallowed the instructions given by alienvariety in the next link.

My iphone did not match all of alienvariety "facts" but the third post (long) works!

*Also* I DID NOT LOSE MY GPS. so not all 3gs lose gps with this unlock.

>>>> https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1211718/ <<<<<<

what alienvariety didn't say in the macrumors link above...

once you've completed the steps in the above post you can launch iTunes. itunes CAN check for updates but DO NOT update your iphone (you could lose everything you've done to get a working phone). now Right click on the iphone icon in itunes and select "restore from backup" and see if you cant get one of those (your old backups) to work for you, this wont mess anything up itunes will just say "no not this one" and you can try the next one. if none of your backups work then "set up as new iphone" and your good to go.

What you get..

iosx 4.1 It's not 5.x it's not even 4.3.5 but it works and Im happy. In the future Im sure they may figure out how to get the latest iosx but for now I have an ipnone I can take pics, notes, play a few games, ipod and use the wifi. I'm a Happy Panda! As a bonus you can now use other sim cards or carrier sim cards to talk/text/g3 with. like www.mysimplemobile.com

If this didn't work..

Try and Try again, give yourself time so you can get this done in one sitting so you dont forget a step you may or may not have taken. Taking the phone apart is not fun and I dont recommend it unless you can do it.

I would like to think I can do stuff and figure out stuff, but this has taken me 3 weeks and so many hours to figure out. I have soooo many other things to do than try to hack my ********** APPLE make me a slave iDevice. and this took soooooo much of my time and was much harder to find the answers for than I could ever imagine. so I took the time to wright this bla bla of info to hopefully make your life easier if you find yourself in the same or similar predicament. Really it's the least I could do. ******* APPLE+ATT!

Ideally I'd like to have the new ios5.0.1 unlocked with an untethered jail break. If you've read this and can help me get there, please hit me up!!!

Thank you so much for this guide. I now have a jailbroken, unlocked 3GS (without gps) bb 06.15.00 on iOS 4.1. What os can I upgrade to while preserving my unlock? Do I need to do it with redsn0w or can I just do it with iTunes? Thanks again to the OP for this guide.

I'm going to try my best to make this short and sweet. I have an old 3Gs I was going to unlock and sell, I did this all without prob, (iPad bb, 5.0.1) then I decided to try and recalibrate battery, so I let it die. I have don't everything known to man to get it out of this endless apple logo/circular thingy loop. I've used tiny umbrella, ireb, u name it, it's been tried. I've used snowbreese and reds now to try and being it back, here is the weird thing, it will restore. It will show up in iTunes, sync, add music, backup, everything. But it NEVER leaves the screen with the apple logo, I've tried pwned

Also, iRecovery, nothing. Just endless looping. Apple logo (10 min or so), circular thingy with logo, for a couple of minutes, then just keeps doing that.

REMEMBER BEFORE I GET BLASTED WITH THINGS LIKE "dfu" blah blah, the phone will show up in iTunes and sync, backup, act like it is actually working and do nothing tho. Stumped.

3GS iOS 5.0 BB 6.15 Frozen On Loading Circle

I had a 3GS that I updated and jailbroke to the normal 4.0 versions, but I updated it to ios 5 when it came out and it was working fine on bb 6.15... I didn't use it for a few weeks and when I selected Cydia, it wanted me to update..but something went wrong with the update, there were errors and now it's frozen on the loading circle after taking a really long time on the apple logo. It's stuck on the loading circle and I can't use the touch functions to completely shut it off, I can only reset it pressing the home and top right buttons.. When I tried this I was given error 20 and I cant go into DFU mode..

Any suggestions would help !! thanks

If your phone is on OS5, then you have a tethered jailbreak and when you update some packages in Cydia which require reboot, you will need to boot tethered with redsn0w so your phone can boot up. My recommendation is to go up to 5.0.1 so you have untethered jailbreak as well as unlock it with ultrasn0w 1.2.5 since the dev team has update so it is compatible with 5.0.1.

UPDATE EDIT: This method will work to unlock and jailbreak, BUT will potentially affect your iPhone detrimentally in a few ways:

1. Jailbreaking invalidates your warrantee.
2. You will lose GPS if you change to iPad baseband.
3. Once you have changed to iPad baseband, it is CURRENTLY supposedly impossible to downgrade. (The Dev Team are working on this...)
3. You may not be able to update using official firmware from Apple in the future.

HOWEVER: This tutorial is for the 3GS, which is now a relatively dated model, very soon to become even more outdated. I made these changes on my phone as I intend to get the iPhone 5/ 4S when it is released anyway - these were acceptable risks. Update according to your own situation.

Ok, guys, despite a lack of response, after about 10 hours of rigorous googling I have successfully unlocked my iPhone.

For all those who are interested, these two resources were essential:

- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4H2tUcz890

The YouTube video helped me specifically because I was unable to log in to Cydia to download UltraSn0w as I had no WiFi connection on my iPhone.

You will need:

- TinyUmbrella (whatever the latest version is)
- RedSn0w 0.9.6rc18 (NOT the latest version...) here on Mac: https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_mac_0.9.6rc18.zip?attredirects=0&d=1 and here on Windows: https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc18.zip?attredirects=0&d=1 (IMPORTANT: if you are doing this on Windows you will need to be in Windows XP Compatibility Mode.)
- iTunes (the latest version)
- 4.1 Official Apple Firmware from here: http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/061-7938.20100908.F3rCk/iPhone2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw

You may need:

- DiskAid (if you have no WiFi like me)

Follow these steps:

1. Run TinyUmbrella and go to the Advanced Tab.
2. Make sure "Set hosts to Cydia on exit" is UNCHECKED.
3. Exit TinyUmbrella.
4. Open iTunes.
5. Put your phone in DFU recovery mode (Hold 'Power Off' and the 'Home' button simultaneously for 10 seconds, then let go of 'Power Off' but continue to hold 'Home' for another 20 seconds)
7. iTunes should recognise an iPhone in recovery mode.
6. Hold 'alt/option' and click Restore.
7. Choose to restore from the 4.1 IPSW file referred to above.
8. iTunes will act like it is restoring and then at the last minute encounter error 1015. This is exactly what we want.
9. Open TinyUmbrella again.
10. Click 'Exit Recovery'.

At this point, your iPhone now runs on 4.1 Firmware. Progress!

11. Open RedSn0w and click Browse.
12. Select the same IPSW as previously (4.1). Click next.
13. Choose to Install Cydia. DON'T opt to change baseband yet or it might crash!
14. Click next. Go back in to DFU mode as described above. The RedSn0w page will automatically begin to update and inform you that it is installing. Your iPhone will display: "Downloading Jailbreak Data..."
15. When this is done (your phone will eventually reboot), exit RedSn0w and turn your phone back off.
16. Now open RedSn0w again. Click Browse.
17. Choose 4.1 IPSW again. Click next.
18. This time deselect Install Cydia and instead check the box to install iPad Baseband. IMPORTANT NOTE: you may lose GPS connectivity in your phone if you do this, but it is an essential step to unlocking your phone. Bite the bullet.
19. Click next and return to DFU mode as before. RedSn0w will now show another little Pineapple image and begin installation of iPad Baseband.
20. Your phone should restart and your good to quit RedSn0w.

At this point, your firmware is version 4.1 and your BB is 6.15.00! Now you just need a final step.

21. If you can connect to WiFi, open Cydia. If you can't, watch the YouTube video I linked above.
22. Once in Cydia, select the Manage tab (along the bottom).
23. Click Sources. Click Edit, then in the top left, Add.
24. Type: http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/
25. Click ok. Then in the top right click Install.

It will install UltraSn0w and should provide you with a message which confirms it is able to unlock your BB (6.15.00)

26. Restart your iPhone. (Do it twice to be on the safe side.)
27. Put in your new SIM from your new carrier.
28. Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode off and on again.
29. It will say 'Searching...' for a little while and then:
30. SIM/ NETWORK ACTIVATED!

I hope this guide has helped you. It was such a time consuming nightmare for me that I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be such a trial for everyone else. GOOD LUCK!

ps. Yes, I'm afraid that means the offer of money is officially retracted :p
pps. If in doubt, DFU mode and restore to 4.1 again and restart the process.

I just registered to say thanks to this HUGE MAN. Somebody should put him a goddamn STATUE near the Liberty Statue. Thanks a lot man, you really helped me after breaking my head for days! Thank you again! :D

PD: I jailbreaked and unlocked 2 phones, a 3G and a 3GS, both of them have functioning GPS, they both work. Maybe iPhones 4 are the ones who get screwed GPS?

GOOD LUCK!

ps. Yes, I'm afraid that means the offer of money is officially retracted :p
pps. If in doubt, DFU mode and restore to 4.1 again and restart the process.
thank you brother, god bless you

Need urgent help

I need URGENT help.....i have heard that the latest iphone 3gs 8gb...05.16.02...new bootrom...cannot be upgrade to the 6.15.00 ? something to do with manufacture date.....is it true? why was this not mention here?
Please if someone knows the solution.....my phone/money will be wasted...:(

Too Cool!

I had to run through the instructions twice but, it worked perfectly on an early model 3GS. I'm not sure about the GPS functionality yet as my brother (the person I unlocked this for) doesn't have a data plan with T-mobile (and I don't know how to check for GPS functionality other than via the 'maps' app). If the GPS doesn't work, it doesn't matter anyway as my brother could care less.

Many, many thanks!

Thank you thank you thank you

PROBLEM SOLVED!! thanks a bunch to alienvariety and everyone else.. your step-by-step guide helped a lot. just got done jailbreaking and unlocking my iphone 3gs.

I did run into two problems but was able to solve them.

Problem 1: TinyUmbrella gave an error at launch saying. "cannot start TSS service. do not try restoring your device! PID:28 must be killed!"
Solution: Disable 'Web Sharing' on Mac OS. Go to System preferences->Sharing->check off 'web sharing'. If you are using windows there are similar solutions. just google it.

Problem 2: The dreaded recovery loop (itunes icon and cable logo)
Solution: Tried all kinds of tools such as tiny umbrella, recboot, fix recovery but they all failed. Then following advise from someone on this same thread, I edited the host file on my mac. I inserted a # sign infront of the last few rows as shown below
#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 tutorialG.localhost
After doing that I went all the way back to step 1 of alienvariety's steps and re-did everything. Second time was the charm. everything worked flawlessly.

Info about the iphone's previous condition:
-Stock OS 4.3.5
-Baseband 5.16.2
I used a macbook with mac OSx snowleopard

now it has jailbroken and unlocked OS 4.1 with ipad baseband 06.15.00

Thanks again to alienvariety. your solution still works (with those tweaks). feb 2012
