So Calif
Makes sense. So effectively the carrier now can black list the unlocked device if payments aren’t made . I guess making the second hand market even more dangerous. How would a used iPhone buyer now know that the phone is not under any payment obligations these days ?
IMEI checker ?

I had someone sell me a used 10 back in the day then report it stollen which bricks it. Now when I buy a used phone, and I haven't on my last couple, I insist on meeting at a carrier store, and I just buy a carrier locked phone. I did notice that when I purchased my 16 pro max though yes, amount in full, no option for apple payments. I guess I'll have to pay it off faster.

Wow what a scam - reporting a phone sold to you as stolen! What would they be able to do by doing that ?

They sold it to me. I registered it in person while they were standing there working with my sim. Then after we parted ways, they reported it stollen, got a replacement with applecare or carrier insurance, and Apple bricks the old "stollen" phone. I ended up selling it bricked as a fancy Ipod, still works with wifi you just can make calls ever again after its locked by Apple. They only way to prevent that, is it have it switched over at a carrier, and have them release the phone from their account.

This was before Apple had much easier ways to remove devices. Now all you'd have to do is watch them remove the device from their account and reset the phone. Once they do that, they can't report it stollen. I didn't know all that back then and I learned the hard way.

This is good to know!

Can't believe someone would lie, cheat and steal for an iPhone.

I would have filed a police report for theft and insurance fraud.

I’m guessing that’s why Find My had to be enabled before insurance pays out huh. Makes sense.

SIM-Lock for providers still exists? I didn't know when I heard about this the last time. I think before the iPhone 4 was released, we had something like this here too. But only if you ordered a phone directly from a provider with a 24 months contract and got a huge discount and the phone.

Now they have only fake discounts and just make the monthly fee higher.
