But anyways got the refund and I am switching back to Windows  .

Sounds like a wise decision for you. I was going to go against the grain and recommend you go back to Windows anyway, until I read your latest reply. The fact is, with all due respect, it looks like your Mac purchase was a pure impulse buy, completely uninformed and with no research done.

There's nothing wrong with preferring Windows. It is each man's God-given right to be wrong. ;)

Seriously though, good luck with whatever you end up using.

You gave up after 24 hours? Oh come on! That's barely enough time to fully scope out iMovie.

Computers may not be life, but the fact you can't put in more than a day of trying into a little aspect of yours is a bit frightening. Whatever happened to patience and persistance? And don't tell me that the new generation doesn't have time for those things because i'm 18.

I switched to mac when I was 13. My dad thought I was crazy. I wanted to edit video. The switch took some getting used to, especially since that was during the whole OS X/OS 9 switchover. But I gave my iMac the chance it deserved. And you know what? I'm glad I did.

It's not right of me to make a big deal of you switching back to PC. Hell, I have a PC behind me that I use...once a month...but it worries me that you couldn't give your mac a little more of a chance. It's not like you were in any risk of running out of time to return it.

Sorry.

Well said!!

Why?

Honestly Windows is not THAT bad. There are virus problems and security issues, but Norton will take care of that. I am just not used to Apple's OS and I prefer XP as a GUI. Call me crazy but that's just me and I think a lot of people agree.

Norton... lol.

I cringe when I noticed that my dept installed NAV on the macs we've got. Oh, now at least you can attest to the fact of how your PC laptop will rise to 70 degrees running NO APPS instead of 1 video editing app.

That 70 degrees rant in the original post was so dumb on so many levels I don't even know where to begin. It is 70 degrees, so what?

So what?

So what?

So what? Seriously. I have had tons of PC laptops that are exactly as hot if not worse.

meh I really don't care

I'm used to windows so that's what I am going to use

OSX is a great OS too bad you had a lousy user experience due to the poor quality hardware. I wouldn't give up on it entirely. If you're near Microcenter in fairfax (same place I live, GMU grad...) or the tyson's apple store, check out OSX on a Mac Pro (desktop) and you'll be very impressed.

But it really comes down to applications -- I'm guessing since you go/went to VT you have some science/math degree. OSX is great for this as it also runs Unix apps. Unix is still predominant in the university science setting (mathematica, etc).

Still there's really nothing wrong with prefering windows b/c it's what you know. Windows does do some things better and let's face it, there's more software -- and as someone who uses both in my business it's very very annoying to have to buy both versions of a software package.

Still if I had my choice I'd go all OSX because it's a much cleaner OS. Not as crufty as windows, nor as insecure. But with XP as long as you play it extremely safe, it's OK.

There's also some really cool apps that aren't available on OSX like this:

If you're looking to upgrade to a new windows notebook you might want to check out the new T61 series from lenovo. It's super cool (50C peak operating temp) and much more sturdy than the MBP.

I ordered a T61 for about $1300 (3 yr warranty, 2GB RAM, T7300 Santa Rosa, 100GB 7200 SATA, XP Pro, 14.1" 1440x900 screen).

Making the jump from Windows XP or Vista to OS X will take a little getting used to. OS X does most things differently than Windows and it won't dawn on you how much you appreciate those differences until you give yourself a little while to get used to it.

You've been doing things the Windows way for so long that OS X way will seem a little foreign and confusing. A week is probably not long enough. Give it a little more time.

I will be switching back to my Dimension 8400 and 512 MB of RAM. Quite a downgrade I know. But w/e, computers aren't life and I hope that is one thing all of you take from the battle of Macs vs. PC's.

Just a classic case of someone being too reluctant to put a sufficient amount of effort to accomplish a goal, so please move along.

That 70 degrees rant in the original post was so dumb on so many levels I don't even know where to begin. It is 70 degrees, so what?

I hope you and others realize the problem with the heat. After using notebooks for several years, the heat of the MBP does prohibit you from using it on your lap without some sort of barrier after a sort time. As such, the MBP can become too hot under normal web browsing, IM, email, etc., but it rarely happens.

As for the OP, it seems that the MBP was purchased primarily for video editing. I honestly cannot believe that the OP would be that stupid to think that the computer would not get hot after editing, so I will not insinuate that is the case.

Even so, just use the thing on your desk while doing anything intensive, unless of course you like burnt legs.

I'd like to chime in here, and I have not read every word of every post, so go easy on me!

I got the 15" MBP last week and I installed FCE HD and did video capture to an external USB drive with no problems. I edited and played around in both FCE & iMovie with no problems. As a matter of fact, this computer is even nicer than my dual 2.0 G5.

This computer is awesome enough for me to feel safe letting go of my big G5 monster, I love it!!

as everyone said FCE is a little advanced, and if you're trying to learn OSX and FCE within 24 hours, there will be some frustration.

If you want to do some EASY editing, get Sony's Vegas. Install Parallels and run this off XPor Vista, works great. Easiest pro-editing software out there.

mikehokie, i feel sorry for you but you're doing this to yourself.

Why did you even bother posting here? People offered some constructive advice about how to solve your problems, but all you want to do is complain. It seems your mind was made up about getting rid of the Mac before you posted, not in trying to solve the problems you have. People in these forums on the whole, seem to have a genuine interest in helping people, and making their adoption of the OS X platform as easy as possible. Quit wasting their time.

I really think you should keep the mac. Hardware-wise, it's top of the line.
I'm a windows programmer, have been for 6 years, but at home I use a Macbook Pro. That is to say, I use both Windows and OS X nearly every day. I would never buy or recommend someone to buy a new windows system. Why? Because Windows is THAT bad.

True, it takes some time to get used to OS X and learn to "trust" the OS to do things right--i.e. unlearn bad Windows habits---i.e. from micromanaging your computer to actually using your computer.

If the heat is a problem, download that fan program. But I urge you to stick with the mac. When I got my first one two and a half years ago, I was skeptical about it for almost a year. It really is better, IMO. It's the little things that really make it worthwhile like exposé and having the menu bar at the top of the screen instead of the top of each window.

If you hate it that much, why not just install windows on your MBP? It will still be one of the fastest windows notebooks out there.

Plus I think I overestimated myself when I got FCE. It is a lot more confusing than I thought and requires more of a learning curve.

**************

I am not going to spend $1,200 for an editing program. That's just not me. I just don't have the patience to deal with such an intuitive program as FCE. iMovie is good, but I am not going to buy a $2,000 computer to run iMovie. Also the heat issues and SuperDrive issues are the main concerns.

I agree, but I stick with OS X because of gems like exposé and the fact that I can do é so easily. and it's just a much more stable system, especially when it comes to suspend on laptops. I really do think that my next desktop will be a custom built windows box though, with Picasa, AIM 5.2.3292, Forefox, and Winamp. G-d do I miss those programs

well, if you are switching back, at least get Vista. Whatever most mac-zealots in here tell you, it is a damn good operating system. If you use a hardware firewall (ie. router) and stay away from IE7, it is just as stable and secure as OS X.

you`ll miss the fancy hardware though :p

Dude, are you serious about going back to Windows and dumping your MBP for a Windows POS?
Come on!
Just because you lack the knowledge to know how to use the software doesn't mean that the Mac isn't good. Dude, it's got SO MUCH potential, you have no idea.
As far as USB and external hard drive issues, I've never had a problem with that.
If you want to free up some hard drive space in your MBP's hard drive, just do as someone mentioned and do a new install of OS X - Install only what you need.
I did this the first time I got mine.
And yea, I've never used FCE, I've used FCP; and it's not very easy to use if you don't know the program well, however, once you do learn how to use it it's very powerful.
Use iMovie for your movie-editing needs - it's enough for most people.
I wouldn't make a Windows PC my main not even if I had a free lifetime supply of Windows upgrades, or software, or hardware.
I do still use Windows XP at work & have a PC at home but my Mom uses it; and I do too for ocassional gaming.
And I do realize that there can be a little problem with the heat, especially if you're running CPU-intensive apps, or gaming, or encoding stuff, but for web surfing and such, it's fine.
I'll never look back.

Sounds like he wants and likes an inferior product because he
knows how to use it. Not Mac material-no imagination.

Or what really happened is Steve Jobs lost a lifetime customer because of inadequate QC and poor design on the MBP.

I had to have Windows on my MBP for gaming, so yesterday I just installed XP on my MBP using BootCamp, and now I feel like I've committed a sin. Its a macintosh- a pure machine that should only have MacOS.... feels like I gave a devil an entry pass to heaven.:D :p

He's already made his decision and gotten his refund. Seriously guys, give it a rest. Another one bites the dust. Oh no. You've still got your Mac, haven't you?

reliable hardware from a company like HP or CyberPower.

Tell me you did not say CyberPower installs reliable hardware. That place is a piece of ****. I bought a computer from them before i learned to build them and to say the league I actually took it apart and rebuilt it myself. The machine was a total mess when I got it. The gpu boiled because they installed a gpu that the fan didn't even work. One good thing out of my purchase of CyberPower it taught me how to build computers, cause I had to rework on that thing like a mother.

Just let the kid go back to his cyperpower machines and go on with his life. Mac isn't for everyone.
