Install/Restore/Fail?

I am reasonably certain that the impression of the forum is correct - whenever the h**l they come out - you won't be able to "backgrade" the next version of the Mac Pro from Mac OS X Lion .

Even though current machines have to install over a copy of Snow Leopard to upgrade to Lion, that does not necessarily imply that methodology applies to in-factory installs. It just sounds too proceedural and awkward for Apple and Steve's mindset. I get the impression that a Factory Install of Lion might be a slightly different big cat than an Upgrade from Snow Leopard. In fact, I rather very much suspect that the necessity has to do with the Via Mac App Store install and download route, since the Mac App Store is only available on SL, not due to some intrinsic limitation of any previous OS.

I am certain there is a route to a "Clean Install" - it just remains to be seen on wether we mere mortals ("consumers") will be allowed to know what that particular Yellow Brick Road may be. As usual, Apple is frustratingly closed mouthed about it.

But make no mistake, Apple is no longer interested in Boxed Software, or shipping discs. And if you are not in a market with broadband, or can't afford it, they're not all that interested in YOU, either. With no word from Apple, as far as anyone can tell, rural users on dail-up... been nice knowing you. But that does put Power Users and technicians that don't work in an Apple Store in an odd position.

I suppose that onece you have a Lion Machine, as far as a restore disk goes, before you do ANYTHING with your new Lion Mac Pro, you clone your startup drive to an external (thunderbolt[?!]... LOL ) drive...

... AND PUT THE FRAKKIN' THING IN A FIRE SAFE.

Jus' sayin'. B4NZ41.

People have already figured out how to extract a DMG from the downloadable Lion install. It's still an awkward process though.
