updated to Big Sur, successfully imported emails thru mail app. Gmail accounts take forever to open.

Hi, Updated to "big sur", successfully imported (several thousand) emails via mail app. Now takes (almost) for ever to open gmail accounts.
Any ideas how to get gmail to open like a normal email account and not snailMail.
Any help much appreciated
