I don't understand how you guys are able to update!? Every time I've tried to update an app, my iPhone 3G freezes and I have to restore. I'm now working on my 25th restore since July 11th ... Do I just have a lemon??

Just cancel the backing up step by pressing the little x, that's what I do these days as all of my important stuff is sync'd, don't really care too much about losing text messages or settings etc.

True - except I learned (the hard way) that whenever you do that, you overwrite your previous backup with an incomplete/corrupt one. Always make sure the full backup is completed before you do something like...oh, I don't know...do a "restore" on your iPhone.

Basically I DID do a full backup before planning a restore the other day (my phone was acting more buggy than usual). But then for some reason I unplugged and connected again, and the backup process started to begin. I clicked on the "x," since I didn't want to have to wait again -- only to realize that after my restore, when it asked if I wanted to restore to my backup, it couldn't. I was forced to restore as "new," with all my settings and game data now gone. Ouch. :(

The good news is that instead of my phone crashing 87,938 times a day like before, it only crashes 34,215 times a day now after my restore!!

Wait...that's good news, right? ;)

The updates mechanism is completely broken. It claims 2 updates are available, yet when I click it I'm informed that there are no updates available.

Most application installs for me are an exercise in patience as they take FOREVER but they do eventually finish, although sometimes they do trigger a reboot and less frequently they will cause a lockup but a hard reset always fixes it without restoring. I think the folks restoring all the time are doing so unnecessarily and just need to wait longer.

Now is that wait time acceptable? Hell no but if you're patient like I mean extremely patient the app will eventually install, hopefully this is fixed in 2.0.1!

My guess on why it takes so long to install is that it is doing some sort of signing post download and that signing process is very resource intensive but that is just a (slightly) educated guess.

I've waited up to thirty minutes for an uninstall on the iPhone. When trying to uninstall using iTunes, it just beachballs and is completely unresponsive (I think I've waited ten minutes for iTunes to recover) ... You're suggesting that thirty minutes to uninstall an app is not long enough?

Same here . . . iTunes updates works (well really doesn't work at all any more) the same way for me. Yet when I go to my iPhone the updates show up there. It just takes forever and a day to update apps from my iPhone :(

Let Apple do the re arranging of apps

Anyone else bothered that your apps are rearranged when they get updated?

With 3-4 pages, and spending time to organize well, it's very annoying when you try keep games on one, and other such things in the right page for it to being dropped in the nearest open spot and have to recall where they were before.

Just now I updated 3, even pulling one that was in the gray bar at the bottom.

This is going to be tiresome if updates are common.

Yes I agree . . . . . very annoying for those who put the time and effort into arranging apps in an organized way.

There's a button in the bottom right corner of the Applications area within your iTunes menu where you view your downloaded apps, and you click on it to check for app updates. If there are some, it can update them all at once. Pretty easy.
Yes, but what do you do if you click on that "Check for Updates" button and it never finds any updates --- even when there are. This has going on for days now. :(

Must be an iTune store problem. Same thing happens for me yet when I check there from my iPhone the updates appear.

Give me a break. People will complain about anything. It's like you guys LOOK for stuff to complain about. I wish I had the time to worry about the arrangement of my iPhone icons.

It's called freedom of speech. If you don't like what you see here you are free to either ignore or leave :p

I don't like how it updates as well. One time, I screwed it up big time by renaming the app on the Finder. iTunes didn't override the older version of the app, but create an updated copy. At the end of the day, the iPhone app folder can be huge and full of duplicated apps.

Call me an outcast, but why do we even have to worry about updates? Is someone ever really going to sit there and say, "you know, I don't really want to fix the bugs in this app." I mean updates are free. Why can't iTunes automatically do all this crap and sync when I plug in? That way the freakin' app icon doesn't have to move. Completely hasselfree. Ge'ez apple get your act together. This whole 2.0 experience has been rediculous.

Maybe it's because you're using your aol username/password, and not your iTunes one? Just a thought...

That's because the iTunes database isn't storing version numbers right. It's all out of whack. I fixed your exact problem more than once already. ugh

From my phone, I tried to update two Apps, one yesterday, one today. The first one (Stanza) began to install, but then the progress bar froze. The phone kept working though. After a sync, the progress bar disappeared entirely, although the Install icon remained. It's still there now.

This morning, I tried to download another update (The New York Times). This time, my phone froze. I restarted it, then the update began to automatically download again and the phone froze again after a few minutes. During those few minutes, the phone functions were extremely laggy. This happened about 4 times. The only way I could stop the endless downloading cycle was to reset my phone from the Settings.

(On the bright side, after I did this, all my system sounds started working again, even though resetting the phone in the past didn't help!)

So now the two Install icons are sitting on my screen. The reset logged me out of the App Store, so I'm not going to log back in until I go home and try it from my computer.

I'm getting similar problems installing updates most of the time. The lesson I learned: Don't do anything else while installing!! Even though other people seem to do other stuff -- mess around with their homescreens, open other apps even -- I can't, as something messed up always happens. Especially if I try to open Settings, as I ALWAYS get this blank screen:

In which case I'm forced to reboot.

One other thing I've noticed: Whenever I have my passcode lock on, and try to update an app, bad things tend to happen more often.

Updates have bricked my iPod Touch 5 or 6 times requiring a full restore. I've given up on updating apps until they issue a firmware update.

It's pretty surprising given how good Apple tends to be with reliability. I'm kind of disappointed.

I too am having the same issue with updates. However, it only happens when I have a lot of apps on my phone. For instance, if I only have 2 apps on my phone, I can easily install and update whatever I want with no problems. If I have 30+ apps on my phone, that is when things go all haywire. I have never been able to get through an update when there are a bunch of apps on my phone. It is like the iPhone can't find the app that it is supposed to be updating etc. I have to restore every time. I restored my phone 3 times last night.

So sick of this buggy software. I can understand some apps being buggy, and a little lag, but this is ridiculous! If an app doesn't install properly, then the app shouldn't work. However, what happens is the whole phone doesn't work! Does not make any sense...

Apple better be planning on sending out a 2.0.1 update to fix this crap before their 2.1 update comes out in September...

Sorry, if I'm not following. From now on, I try to update the apps on iTunes rather than over the air on the iPhone Apps Store. It tends to be a little bit better.
