I have a 2009 iMac that attempted to upgrade the OS and now comes up with a firmware error. Does anyone know of a fix for this error?

I had that error come up on my 2010 iMac years ago. I honestly can't remember what I did to fix it, unfortunately. Did you try Internet Recovery?

Command-R allowed me to do a restore from time machine. The OS is functional again for the moment. Not sure I should do any OS updates as the maching is getting rather slow. I may investigate is a SSDD can be installed to make it faster.

Thank you for your assistance.

"I may investigate is a SSDD can be installed to make it faster."

Putting an SSD into a 14-year-old 2009 iMac will coax a little more speed out of it.
But the reality is, that it's time to be looking for a more modern replacement...
