I've had this problem multiple times when updating the Apple TV. The solution for me was to connect it to the network via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
I also first got "update unsuccessful", now trying again and getting "The AppleTV update could not be downloaded at this time".
Did Apple realize there's a bug at the last minute and pull the release? Seems like it.

OK, I've had 3 failures now. I'm going to back off and try again later. I have my hands full with OSX and iPad right now.
I have 2 apple tvs, the both failed the first time i tried to update, first time took a few mins second time is taking 30 mins to download
Failed the first time, second time it bricked my apple tv now is telling me to plug into iTunes what the flying 747 **** apple!

If you can get through Apple's traffic and download it through here, you can update via a micro usb plugged directly into your Mac with iTunes.
