Hi All !

Was just wondering if people have done this move and what they're thinking.
I have an Ipad pro 2017, that battery life is starting to be sub-par and was wondering if the new Air would be a good replacement. I don't need all the features of the Pro and find it to be a bit expansive.

The answer to your question is not or cannot be a stark yes or no. There are a number of variables to consider. The core questions are: (1) what do you want to do with the Air that you can’t do with the 10.5” and (2) what features are important to you that the Air has?

In my opinion, I would say no.

I don't think people remember what the ipad pro '17 actually is. Of course the iPad air 2020 is worth the upgrade. Same amount of ram, better/faster processor, new touch ID tech, modern ipad design, compatibility with 2nd Gen pencil and Magic KB. Do it.
Of course, one could also point out...the Air lacks Promotion, more RAM, more storage at the base model, and is merely $50 or so cheaper if the 256GB option is exercise.

True though at this time I wouldn’t bet on buying an iPad Pro 2020 if you need to because the next one is coming right through the corner

with the Air 4 to 2017 iPad Pros, largely a good upgrade though you Will miss some things like promotion, camera flash,

USB C though makes this iPad so much better

ummm both the Air 4 and 2nd gen Pros have

4GB of RAM ( but the Air 4 has speedier DDR4X-4266)

also both have 64GB as the base storage

besides promotion the Air lacks the flash for camera, 6 element lens for camera, and a few minor things though A14 is the big deal over A10X
Yes, true. My working assumption was if a jump in storage capacity was needed. I say this because I recently traded in my 10.5” IPP for the 2020 11” IPP and was assessing the new Air as an option. I figured that since I wanted more than 64 GB (and Promotion), the 2020 IPP was the better bet. But this reasoning is specific to me.

I only just re-edited my post before you quoted it ???

I understand your needs and yes the 2020 pro is a better bet overall than the Air 4, much like 10.5 inch iPad Pro to the Air 3 ( which felt a bit boring)

now that you have the 2020 pro and that USB C is far better for ports though, no matter what internal storage you have a external drive makes the usb c experience so much better than how limited lightning is

which is why I wish Apple released a lightning to usb c adapter

yes the Air has USB C.. just the output is 5Gbps from what I heard from a YouTube Review of it compared to the Pros which have 10Gbps

so Air 4 has USB 3.0 while the Pro’s speed is based on USB 3.1 I believe

Ok. Thanx. I did not know that. I’ll check out some info on the interwebs.

The issues I have with my Pro is that it is starting to randomly restart when in use.
I've tried restoring it with and without a backup.

I don't have any need for Promotion, I had the pro as the last time I updated the price was good versus the ones available.

I was looking at the air as it seemed good value, with a modern design and to have a good set of features vs what I mainly use my ipad for. Mainly streaming content, drawing with the pen and consuming news content

Then your choice works just fine for your purposes, I’d say.

The 2017 10.5 pro only has pro motion and the quad speakers over the ipad air 4. The Air 4’s A14 SoC is considerably faster than the A10X in every area (single core, multi core, GPU and neural engine). It also has the newer Pro design with usb c, support for apple pencil 2 and a larger 10.9” minimal bezel liquid retina display. In this regard the Air 4 is actually more of a pro device than the 2017 Pro itself. Having said that, the 2017 pro is still an excellent device in its own right though.

I’m on a 10.5 Pro, and my thinking is similar to snipr125 above.
If the air had at least 2 of the following features, I probably would have upgraded: quad speakers, 600 nit brightness, ProMotion, or 6 gb of ram. I’m hesitant to ”upgrade” to the air 4 because it’s actually a downgrade/sidegrade in quite a few ways.

If the 120hz ProMotion display, 6GB RAM, LiDAR, Dual Camera with Flash and Quad Speakers of the iPad Pro do not matter to you then rather get the Air 4.

You could even go for the iPad 8th gen and you should be fine.

As someone who uses the ipad for music and audio, I would not want to lose the headphone jack.
wireless headphones have latency

In my opinion is not worth it, I researched it and found it to be a downgrade in some specs. I decided to go with a 2020 iPad Pro 11.

harley, your list ends there as there is nothing more that the 10.5 Pro has over the iPad Air 4, but if your 10.5 Pro is almost new out of the box then you made the right choice to keep it as it’s still a good iPad.

I sold my iPad Pro 10.5 for 350 bucks and upgraded to the iPad Air 4. couldn’t be happier. Personally I never noticed the ProMotion display anyway. For one thing it’s convenient to be able to store the Apple Pen right on the iPad and have it therefore always ready and charged. Another thing is the new design. love it, also the location of TouchID is more convenient

Wife did this and is happy with the Air. Her pro battery life was just about cut in half. And to be honest she never used any of the pro features.
