Is an Upgrade from Ipad pro 2017 to Ipad air 2020 worth it

The number one feature I dislike about my 10.5" iPad Pro is Touch ID. It seems like a waste of time to me to get another Touch ID iPad. I will not upgrade unless it has Face ID. Ironically, I like Touch ID phones, but it's a very different experience with iPads, at least if you use a keyboard.

On an iPhone, you grab the phone with your thumb touching the home button, and it automatically unlocks.

On a Face ID iPad, if you tap the keyboard's space bar to wake it up, it automatically unlocks. In contrast, on a Touch ID iPad, if you tap the keyboard's space bar to wake it up, it takes you to the lock screen. After all this time, I still find this annoying.

I haven't tested the speakers yet on the Air, but I am told the Pro speakers are still better.

I am waiting for a 2021 iPad Pro 11-12". Plus, I want 128 GB, and don't need 256 GB.

Yeah you loose pro motion but you gain
usb c
Apple Pencil 2
bigger screen
faster professor
new design

I’d say it’s a tie. If your iPad is busted and the price is right, go for it man!

I am in the same situation, upgrading or waiting for the new March event?
Although I think the price of the Pro is too much and I don't need the extra specs. (camera)

Only I will miss Promotion display...

Because of ProMotion and because of this:

which may impact your UX vs the 10.5 pro

This is a tough one but overall I'd say no.

If you lose anything it is not an upgrade.

That really depends on whether you care for the lost feature or not.

Newer iPhones don't have 3.5mm headphone jacks but most don't appear to care about that. You could probably count on one hand the number of customers who don't consider iPhone 6s -> X to be an upgrade.

Personally, if I didn't need more storage, I'd happily upgrade from the Pro 10.5 to the Air 4.

I did exactly this and great decision. I do not notice any change from ProMotion...its all just hype. The new Air feels significantly faster, has a better design, USB-C, Pencil 2, Magic Keyboard, better battery (likely from my 10.5 being old). Plus Apple gave me $321 for my old iPad, making the Air super cheap...easy decision for me...

I'm a little confused about this conversation. I have had two ipad pros. One was 2015 and one was 2017. I am sure that the 2017 version has USB C and was compatible with the newer apple pencil.

Nah, 2018 is when they added USB-C along with the FaceID redesign. The 2017 2nd gen still had old design with Lightning port. I'm typing this post on the 2017 right now.

Didn’t know they even included a professor! Finally I get the free education I dreamed about!

That is the third generation from 2018 onwards.

If restarts are due to poor battery health, then, perhaps, proper battery replacement would be enough to use it for few more years, if it doesnt have white spot issue.
If battery and random restarts are not connected, then new device imho is mandatory, Air 4 being rather good on paper IMHO.
If I can sell my replacement iPP 10.5 for acceptable sum, I will seriously consider Air 4 if new Pro 12.9 turns out to be nothing more than screen update.

The lack of Pro Motion would be a deal killer for me. I really notice it on sites that use vertical scrolling. I have a 10.5” iPad Pro and it ruined using my iPhone for any kind of scroll reading.

ProMotion isn’t just hype. If it was, they’d let it die like Force Touch. But instead, Apple is going to bring it to all iPhones. Because once you notice how iPhones scroll, you can’t unnotice it ever again.

But if you don’t see a difference, be glad that you don’t notice. And don’t look for the differences.

I made this change. Pro-Motion is unnoticed by me. Faster processor makes a difference. USB-C is a game changer; love it. It’s close but I do feel like it is an upgrade.

I plan on doing this soon with our iPad 10.5's 64 gb , we got 2 of them. apple trade in is $280 each. I can get the air 4 64 gb for $539 with vet discount. Seems like a decent deal for 3 year newer processor and a brand new battery. My iphone 12 has no promotion, i turned it off on my ipad to get used to not having it.... won't be an issue.

Hmm interesting I always found iPhones to still be pretty smooth I could transition to a iPhone 7 or my current daily 11 Pro no problem (though it also has 120hz touch sampling) I think since the screens are smaller it ends up looking smoother. On 60hz iPads it’s super noticeable though I’m still getting used to my Air 4 coming from a 10.5 but it’s still a nice experience with a ton of upgrades if I look past the refresh rate.

In Cali, there's usually 7.75-11% sales tax so buying tax-free from the Exchange is often a better deal.
