Apple intelligence is amazing mate and that's obvious because we expect nothing but the best experience from $3.6 trillion company.

Good mornaaang. Yes it's worth it. No this isn't a Tim Cook burner account don't be absurd.

Thx for suggestions. The ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence is not even full version? Better just download the ChatGPT app and use the full power version of it?
The ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence works like this:
  • You ask Siri a question.
  • If she knows the answer, she answers.
  • If she doesn’t know the answer, she will ask you “do you want me to check ChatGPT” (you can turn off Siri asking permission if you want)
Gruber reported that at least for some questions, having Siri ask ChatGPT resulted in wrong answers.

Note that I don’t use Siri like this, if I’m asking a question I almost always know whether or not I want to ask ChatGPT vs Siri. I have the action button set to open ChatGPT and a control center shortcut to open ChatGPT Voice. You could set the action button to open voice though.

We’ll see if any of this changes with the “updated Siri” in 18.4.

My iPad Pro m1 supports Apple intelligence, I found it useful is some cases. But I am not upgrading my iPhone 13 PM. If you have an iPad or mac that supports, try it.

Why does Tim have elephantiasis of the fist?
He is using the never before seen iPhone 20 Pro Max that uses third gen ceramic shield glass on back that makes the phone look invisible to the public eye but makes the hand behind it look a little bit weird, he is probably just holding it wrong as Jobs said.

I can tell Apple Intelligence really “effortlessly” created these

Siri was launched on the 4s. I suspect it will be fully "baked" into the iphone 5. Should be working no problem by then.

ha! Touché

To be clear, I'm not at all interested in Apple Intelligence from what I've seen to this point, and I have very little faith in Apple making it "great" ... for exactly the reason you highlighted

We've been fighting with a barely useful Siri for over a decade

AI baked into the iOS is not the same as using an app like chatGPT like some are suggesting here. When implemented as demoed at WWDC it'll make your everyday use better without you ever noticing it.

That said, until Apple achieves that functionality it's not worth upgrading your iPhone.
17 Pros are supposedly coming with 12GB RAM and 48MP cameras all around and that'd make a better upgrade even with a work in progress AI.

So, I vote nay on the upgrade.

True regarding "We've been fighting with a barely useful Siri for over a decade." However IMO when folks equate AI to Siri they are making a huge mistake. AI is not Siri, and AI is on a very different growth curve.

IMO anyone buying hardware today should be planning on that hardware using AI in future years. Those choosing one-year life cycles on something like an iPhone can indeed pretty much ignore AI as an issue. However two year life cycles and longer I suggest planning to see AI demands on every device.

Absolutely not. Question for you: How did you manage to live this long without A.I.? A.I. is the best definition of "a solution looking for a problem".
You may be correct that A.I. is the best definition of "a solution looking for a problem." However AI is extraordinary technology advancing at exponential speed worldwide. Tech experts everywhere are awed by the power. IMO it is very foolish to disregard AI just because one cannot perceive immediate benefit.

A.I. is a complete and utter waste of time.. stop drinking the kool-aid.

Interesting comment. Do you own one? Or are you just hypothesizing? I have used minimum every other generation since v1, use a 16 PM every day and never for a second have I considered it to be "Apple's weakest iPhone release in over a decade." So I would suggest that you are just blowing smoke.

Edit: I agree that AI is still beta, but AI is just a tiny part of the iPhone 16 Pro's competence. The 16 Pros are great phones; however I would not suggest that anyone should buy one just to get the AI capability. However if one was choosing between a 16P and an older iPhone I would consider the AI capability of the 16P to likely be a significant value add for future iOS versions.
Seriously? I agree with the post to which you responded. I can't think of any new iPhone release that brought less to the table than the 16, nor any new iPhone release for which its marquee feature remains largely unfinished six months after its release. To me, it's the weakest release by a large margin.

It literally saved me 40 hours of work over the past two weeks on a project. Saved me from working late and/or missing an unrealistic client deadline. Is it applicable to everyone's job? Of course not. But is absolutely not a waste of time.
Making things easier, faster and convenient are not things we need to be working toward.. these things only breed entitlement, narcissism, and weakness. Hardship breeds patience, humility and compassion. But, hardship includes discomfort and most people can't handle that because they've never trained themselves to be comfortable with discomfort. Diamonds aren't formed without pressure. Gold is not purified without fire. Nothing worthwhile comes easy or comfortably. A.I. is only going to make humanity lazier and dumber.. it's already robbing us of space on devices we pay top dollar for.

Yeah, I’m just going to have disagree with you there. We absolutely should be working to making things easier, faster, and more convenient. For example, I think it’s better washing machines and dishwashers exist rather than us spending hours a day washing clothes and dishes by hand. Making things easier and faster frees us up to do better, harder, and more import things.

I’m certainly glad I got to spend the “extra” 20 hours a week over the past two weeks being with my young child and my wife rather than sitting in front of a keyboard for hours at night and over the weekend. I also got in some value-added work for in that wouldn’t have happened otherwise that’s going to help grow business. I don’t think that makes me lazy or dumb.

And as someone who does long distance cycling and running in addition to weightlifting, I can assure you I’m comfortable with discomfort.

Discomfort that you plan for and allow is not discomfort at all. I served in the military.. trust me, real discomfort is the kind that comes upon you unexpectedly and lasts for an unknown time.

Just as we were in a period where every new A chip brought significant speed advances from ~2010-2018, I think we are now in a period where every A chip will bring significant NPU advances. As others have pointed out, Apple Intelligence is still not feature-complete from what we were shown at WWDC and a lot of the features that have rolled out are not working that well yet.

My suggestion would be to use ChatGPT / Gemini / Claude etc for now (even though their features won't be usable in the native Apple apps) and look towards the iPhone 17. I think it's highly likely that Apple will lock some new AI features behind the A19 chip, so if you're interested in upgrading primarily for AI I would wait and see what the iPhone 17 series brings.
