In a similar situation my friend is still running an iPhone 4 which he just got to replace a 3. I don’t know where he’s getting these but the 3 he was using since 2007. He said he can’t really surf the internet anymore and he can’t watch any videos anymore. This includes short YouTube videos. He said all he can do is use the camera, call and text.
Love it! I came from being fed up with a slow 5 - fully ready to get the SE when it came out - but then I got given this 6 - so basically I’ve spent the last two months marvelling at how speedy the 6 is - it’s still a novelty to me...

Developers have to support the current iOS and iOS-1. So, until October this year you’re safe as far as support goes. However, when iOS 14 is released you’ll find support for your iOS 12 device drops quickly off a cliff unless iOS 14 is no different to iOS 13.
I recently repaired an iPad 3 and found it would no longer download apps from the App Store. Not even ones that I owned but had been abandoned. So, that’s my second tip. If you can, make sure you have copies of apps you like on your main computer for the future.
as far as performance goes, the SE will be much better than the 6.

Sadly, new versions of iTunes don't have the App Store anymore.

If you're running a recent version of iOS, restoring apps from local iTunes is no longer an option. I think iOS 13 is when the legacy version of iTunes for business stopped working.

I've got a laptop where I keep archived apps for devices running iOS 10 and older. Alas, all my current/primary devices are on iOS 13 already.

Very much appreciate all your inputs - I feel like this is retail therapy; my plans to buy the SE to replace my 5 have been temporarily thwarted by the unexpected arrival of a 6 - but you’re all gently convincing me to move on nevertheless 🙂

I certainly would have upgraded my 6 for the new SE. I say would have because once iOS 13 came out and wasn't supported on the 6 I bit the bullet and got an 11 Pro. Now I wish I had waited, but the new CarPlay alone was worth the upgrade back when we could actually drive anywhere. My wife just upgraded her original SE for the new SE and I can say it is way faster than my 6 was. The only thing that would take some time to get used to (and the reason I never got a 7S or 8) is the lack of an actual physical home button. There is just a circle where a home button would be and haptic feedback simulates the click a button would make. Didn't like it when testing in the store but doesn't seem so bad after using my wife's phone for more than a few minutes.

If possible, buy direct from Apple. You get 14 days to "test drive" the phone and see if it's worth the upgrade. If you don't feel it's worth the upgrade, return the phone back to Apple for a full refund.

Coming from a 6 the new SE is more than worth it. The difference between the two phones is huge. From the CPU, to the Camera, Camera Features, Home Button, IP67 rating, True Tone and P3 Display, Wi-Fi and LTE speeds etc... you also get support for iOS 13.

You can compare them here: https://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/?device1=iphoneSE2ndgen&device2=iphone6
I compared this video on my S8, and other than the fact that it is amoled, the SE display is otherwise better. The difference in color intensity when looking at this image from the slides linked is notable.

Yes, the P3 Wide Color gamut is noticeable. I had a 6s and now the 8 Plus and i do notice the brighter and sharper colors.

Much like you I am not a power user and don't need the latest greatest technology. I just go by iOS support. I had an iPhone 6 for five years. Sold it in August 2019 when I knew it would not be supported in iOS 13 and bought a 6s net spend $80 knowing it would get me to October / November 2020.

In 5 or 6 months when iOS 14 arrives I will have a decision to make 7, 8 or SE. That is the form factor I want, size and home button. So maybe you could consider a 7 or an 8 and not spend a huge amount on a new SE?

I think a new iPhone 8 will/does cost more than the iPhone SE2

If you can afford it, you can wait a bit to see the 5.4" iPhone 12, there are some rumors that say that it will be even smaller than the 6.

Well I’m curious... but also aware that upgrading so soon after buying one brand new phone would mean that Apple had *got me* 🤔 I don’t care about cameras any better than the one I have on my 6; I don’t play games; I like to hold the phone by it’s top and bottom bezels: I like speed - that’s about it. But I’m also curious how much a traded-in SE2020 would fetch - you don’t seem to be able to offer it as part-exchange yet on the Apple website.

Ah sorry, I've missed your previous comment, so you already decided! SE is a solid buy in any case, congrats!. I'm also thinking in replacing my 6 this year and I have a similar usage pattern as you (basic usage). In my case I want something a bit different as I'm with my 6 since the first release (september-14) and the SE2, although is way better, is using the same form factor and the user experience would be very similar apart from the speed. In any case, if the late 2020 models does not convince me, SE2 will be my natural choice.

There’s no rush, eh?

There’s also a handy 14-day return period if you buy direct from Apple...

Well, it arrived already! It certainly seems fast at opening apps... the weirdest thing so far is the feel of the home button compared with the actual button on my 6. I know this is going to be old news to everyone else - but there’s no sensation difference choosing between feel 1, 2 and 3. And - pressing the thing feels like the whole bottom of the phone is moving- not just the button! 🤔

Going from the original SE to the new SE myself, and that change away from a physical home button is not a positive step IMHO. I prefer the physical button on my original SE and iPad mini.

I’m still trying to convince myself that the phone isn’t broken - such a strange button, making the whole bottom edge feel like it’s moving.

...or is that the point?? 😎

I don't feel like the whole bottom edge is moving, but it could just be a matter of perception because we're so used to "something" moving.

i would choose number 1 intensity is the best for me in my iphone 7 is more natural

I‘ve swapped the battery once, exactly 2 years ago when Apple offered it at a discount. At that time the battery was really bad (<70%)Battery performance is 97% now, I’m a very light phone user, I charge every two days and always try to keep the battery level between 20% and 80%.

what setting do you have it on? I was worried about the transition but setting 3 has been pretty good for me. Now I actually prefer the no button button

I love my new phone. Can’t believe how cheap it was from Walmart

I can’t say I noticed much of a difference. I think I left it on 2.

It does the job, but I do miss the physical button. When using my iPad mini, the physical button is just so much more tactile. But I guess I’ll adapt. I’ll have to.
