Ok so there are 14 apps that come up when I type iphoto into the search...which one is the correct replacement? And Claudinho what do you mean go into the libraries wherever there are any....? To what are you referring?

Hi, VanTvyl! Look... when you start with your first iPhoto album or individual pics (it doesn't matter), you have a "library", normally located at your pictures folder and it's called "iPhoto Library"... the icon of this library is exactly the same that of the App but the difference is that the App icon is in the Applications Folder, but the library is in your picture folder. When you right click over this icon and choose "content" you'll find the "masters" folder. All your pictures, albums, etc, are there.

On the other hand, to retrieve the App you don't have to search above in AppStore window. As I told formerly, it's necessary to have purchased iPhoto in the past. So you can re-download it from "purchased" items list.

Photo vs iphoto

I had the same problem. Took me days to solve it as the progress wheel just kept going round and round when I tried to open it. The app store said Photos wasn't avail in Aust. All I did was download the App store updates for imovie and it all worked just fine the next time I opened photos.

So I had my hard drive replaced, and had three apps that didn't want to update. I wasn't about to delete them and pay $20 for each one, so I went under "purchase history" (app store) and REINSTALLED Yosemite.

Easy fix.

Solution to grey apple id box

I called apple support since I had this same exact problem after upgrading. http://www.apple.com/support/

My problem was that I have a MACBOOK PRO that i had bought used from someone else and they had iPhoto included on the Mac. When updates came out I could never update it since the previous owner owned it and when I tried to update it a box popped up and said to sign-in with a GREY APPLE ID BOX pre-filled with the previous owners id (email.) I don't know his password or have contact with him. I updated to Yosemite and to be up to date with the software iPhoto NEEDED to be updated (iPhoto app had a circle with a line through it.) I called apple support and they told me I needed to purchase it through my apple id in order to get access back to the application and to my hundreds of photos.

1. Go to finder on the top right and type in "applications" and enter.

2. Look for the iPhoto application logo.

3. Click and drag the logo to the trash in on the bottom right on your mac. (Don't worry your files/photos won't be deleted we are just replacing the application.)

4. Now empty your trash by clicking on to the "trash bin" icon and on the top right you will see "empty" click that.

5. go to the app store and sign out from your account. (go to the top left and click on "store" and click sign-out) of course if you not signed in the first place you're fine.

6. Close the app store window.

7. Reopen window and type in on the top right search box: "iPhoto" and enter.

8. You will see the application and it should say "free" or some price. (for me it was free) once you click on that it says install and click that and then it says sign-in.

9. Put your apple id and password. (if it says its free you won't be paying but if it says a price you will be charged) just to let you know.

10. The application will start to download and you will be able to track its process in the "launchpad" (the app that is a rocketship.)

11. The download takes 5-10 minutes.

12. Click on the iPhoto app and you will see that it will load up. A box will pop up saying that it will need to be upgraded. Click on the button that says "upgrade."

13. It should load up in less than 5 minutes depending on how many photos you have in your library.

14. You will be ready to go! You might see that the icon for iPhoto has a circle and line through it but that is fine. Just exit out of iPhoto and click on it again. The icon should be replaced with the new look icon for iPhoto.

15. Repeat this process with another application you may have that is owned by someone else and you don't know their password.

This did not work for me. I deleted iphoto, logged out, closed the window and logged back in and iphoto is not available to purchase. It's not listed. And now I've deleted my app....I hope I haven't lost all of my photos. :(

iPhoto is no longer available in the App Store unless you previously purchased it or owned it under your AppleID, and then it would be under your purchases. Otherwise you cannot get it.

Even if you deleted the iPhoto app, your photos should still be there. By default they will be in the Pictures folder in your account in a file called iPhoto library.

Why do people have this problem? when I updated it automatically sorted itself out when I went into iPhoto. Simply installed Yosemite, and iPhoto rebuilt the library first time opened, no other action was needed.

No, your photos are not lost. They are in your Mac and I'll show you how to get them back. But before I have to explain that you won't find iPhoto for download in the searching tool of AppStore. If you purchased iPhoto formerly you will find it in Purchased Items. If not, of course you lost the App, but it's not important if you cannot have a compatible version for Yosemite. Now, the instructions for having back your photos:

1.- Go to any of your libraries wherever you have a one in the Mac.

2.- Right click over the icon and choose "Content Package" or "Show Content Package" that it's the first option bellow "Open With"

3.- Find a Folder called "Masters" and enter in... Guess what? Hehehee!! All yor photos organized in subfolders by date and numbers.

4.- Follow this procedure for all your libraries no matter where directory they were in.

I hope this will be helpful for you! Tell me when you are done!

Cheers!

It refers to a file called "iPhoto Library" which is normally in your Pictures folder (unless you moved it somewhere else). Right click (or control+click) on the iPhoto Library and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu (Step 2 from the instructions). A new finder window will open showing the contents of the iPhoto Library. Look for the Masters folder (Step 3 from the instructions).

Is there an iPhoto showing up in your Purchased list in the Mac App Store? Post a picture of what you are seeing.

I too am having the same problem after an upgrade. I have followed the steps above and deleted the app from my applications. Now the iPhoto app is not showing up in 'purchased' section of the App store and I'm not getting the iPhoto app icon showing up in the search section. I have attached a pic of what I'm seeing...

Please help

Dancerella, you won't find iPhoto in search section because Apple is not supporting it anymore. Now, if you don't find iphoto in your "purchased" section of App Store that is a very strange thing. The first thing you have to do is to be sure that you purchased iPhoto under your personal account. If not, there is no possibility to find it in purchased items, because it'd have been probably bought under another Apple ID. So check this out first and tell us about. Cheers!

Thank you for your response. iPhoto was already installed on my MacBook pro when I purchased the laptop from the Apple store. I didn't realise I would loose any of my apps simply by upgrading to OS X El Capitan :( Is there another way to get iPhoto?

Ok, I'm trying to figure out what's going on. If iPhoto came with your Macbook from the store it's the reason cause you can't find it in purchased items, because you did not purchase it. But let me ask you something: did your Macbook come with Yosemite originally?

I believe so, yes.

I believe so, yes.
That's curious! Since Yosemite there is no more iPhoto App in Macs comming from the store. Unless you purchased a used device. My wife had a macbook pro late 2013 with Yosemite an in order to get iPhoto there I had to login to my App Store account to download it from my purchased items list. Now, I have my own macbook pro that surprisingly came with El Capitan. Again, there was no iPhoto but the new app called Photo (without the "i") that is comming from Apple by default in devices since Yosemite was launched. In this new macbook with El Capitan I had to download iPhoto with my AppStore account. So... are you sure your macbook is not a refurbished one or something? As I told you before, from the fabric you can't get iPhoto.

Rule number 1: Always make at least 1 backup to external drive before installing new OS! Use Time Machine or Disk Utility which are included with the OS.

Photos was released with the 10.10.3 update. Because you had iPhoto installed before El Capitan installation Software update should have recognised it and offered to update it to latest El Capitan compatible version 9.6.1. I don't know why that didn't happen.

Did you make a backup before installing 10.11? If you did you could copy iPhoto from the backup drive and see if software update recognises it (Apple menu>app store>update tab).

If you don't have backup then its easiest to take the Mac back to where you bought it and ask them to install iPhoto for you.

Alternatively you could try restoring the Mac with internet restore but its a lot of work and you must first make backup of any important files to external drive...

Okay so here is my predictament I have a Macbook running 10.6.8 with iPhoto 9.2.3. I want to upgrade to a Macbook Pro running 10.11.6 but I'd like to get iPhoto on the new Mac because I use it for work. 10.6.8 I believe is pre-App store so I'm not sure how to get iPhoto on the new computer since I never technically purchased it in the app store. Can anyone help me with this?

You could try copying the iPhoto 9.2.3 to newer Mac which has 10.11.6 installed, then open App Store and check updates tab. App Store might recognise the iPhoto and allow you to update it to latest 9.6.1 version. There is no quarantine it will work.
