Actually, you can use a 5600 (or a 5500) series CPU in a single socket machine, but you can not use a 3600 (or a 3500) series single socket CPU in a dual socket machine.

No that is for dual socket machine you need to a cpu model number that starts with a W for single socket machine.

Actually that is incorrect as explained above. The alpha really has nothing to do with the application, it relates more to the speed of the CPU. E = Enterprise, X = Performance, W = Workstation.

Thanks, I am thinking what will be he fastest upgrade before EOL?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117253

3.46 is the fastest they went with in that series of cpu so yes better of saving a few dollars and seeing if you can get the w version that is guaranteed to work if you have that kind of money to spend. You can buy this below save $700 and have cpu tray to resell if you wanted.

It will work. Just expensive.

You certain those X chips work in a single tray?

Thanks, I wonder if 3.33 => 3.46 is noticeable?

Nah it is 4% faster and that is what you will get in a machine with it. Better off going with a pci-e internal SATA3 card with a blazing fast SSD on it with the money saved that will give you more of a performance increase than that extra .13mhz ever will.

Yes people do but again crazy money the Solo X2 and a decently fast SSD you mount on it would do you or something like this below which I have purchased but not yet put in (waiting until my 6 core 3.33 sells so I have to shut down my machine before installing) it is supposed to allow you too raid two drives. This guy is out of stock but if you could find one of them.

Thanks, I read that those work but have a 15 second boot delay?

I'm using the SoloX2 and there is a definite noticeable delay with booting from PCI. It's weird sometimes it takes so long that I'm about reset, then the apple logo shows. Once the apple logo appears it takes less than 10secs after too fully boot.

Thanks all, that sounds like a better next upgrade.

X (performance) is all about speed, but what's the difference between E (enterprise) and W (workstation)?

I am thinking W is durable and fast, but that also applies to E.

2.8mhz quad to 3.46mhz 6 core on Mac Pro 5,1

Well I just upgraded my 2.8quad core 5,1 to 3.46 w3690 without any problems. and to my surprised my ram speed switched from 1066 to 1333mhz. It was ram I bought years ago from OWC and I guess that older ram was clocked down to to slower speed because of the CPU. I use arctic silver 5 since I had some from my PC build a few months ago so I was knowledgable on how to use it. You only need to put a drop in the middle not spread it all around like apple's goop which was a mess to take off by the way.

Great how pricey was it?

Not bad at all actually. I paid $349 for it on ebay with free shipping. It literally took me longer to unplug everything and open the side than to do the swap. Its a simple and worthwhile upgrade. My R9 GPU is a nice touch too, that was a bit more :)

Thanks, new?

Thanks, new?

No it was used but in great shape and with a 30 day warranty. If it fails it will happen by then. I looked all over for a new one and couldn't find any place with one actually in stock.

X5xxx CPUs a good "Future Proof" for Single CPU 4,1 and 5,1s

I put a W3690 in my Single CPU board and discovered the hard way that had I gotten a X5690 I could use 64GB of RAM.

Just a detail I want to make common knowledge.

A W3690 stops at 56GB.

^^^^Yes, X56xx CPUs work in both Single and Dual processor flashed 4,1 and 5,1 Mac Pros. W36xx CPUs work only in Single processor machines.
