"need"? no
you can simply replace the default files with your own
( /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/ )
but if you have it use a custom folder location then yes you would need to

I'm using the blogs/wikis thing from snow leopard server...

any idea what I need to change at the command line so that screen sharing will work again?

if using the wikis and all that, i'd say to just add your own index.html file to the default folder with the links in place to go to the wiki and blog sections or however you want to rig it

i just tested this on my test machine:
custom.url.com/wiki DID NOT work (edited hosts file to direct my custom url to 127.0.0.1)
localhost/wiki DID work

so any random domain which points at your server IP will go to the default folder UNLESS specified as having its own specific root folder

as far as the screen sharing thing... no clue - i can maybe screw around with it later when i get home in a few hours

(apologies if this post doesn't make 100% perfect sense... I'm in history class at the moment lol)

Ok i got a fix! If you simply edit the httpd.conf file ( /etc/apache2/httpd.conf ) and add the line:
NameVirtualHost *:80
then restart the web service - it will then recognize the separate domains going to the server and direct them accordingly to where they need to go :)

Does it matter where we put the NameVirtualHost *:80? Is there a specific line it needs to go on?

I upgraded from Snow leopard server to lion server yesterday and the upgrade wiped out all of my settings and websites... The worst part is that now I can't get the sites working again, they all go to the default Apple placeholder page.

I have two sites with 2 separate domain names that I was hosting on my snow leopard server. I recreated them in the new server app and pointed them to the right folders for the site documents, but when I try to load the URL from a browser I just get the apple "welcome to lion" page. Anyone have this problem and solve it?

There is a third site in the list that the server app created on it's own that does point to that welcome page, but I can't edit or delete that site in the list.

logging in as root I was able to browse /library/collaboration and view the files that were stored in the archived wiki.. I was able to retrieve enough content that I'll be able to rebuild the wiki... would have been nice though if Lion would have migrated this stuff for us...

Lost users

We did the same thing, did the upgrade, and now all the users are screwed, the data is there, but the users were gone.

We fixed the websites, we found that the upgrade had made a new system Folder and all of the settings are in "Previous System"

pain = yes

we basically rest all the websites, back to the old folders they were in, reinstalled the Web Helpdesk we use.

Still having issues with users emails, calendars and address books

any with ideas would be great to hear :)

here are the tools that are missing for LION server

From Apple .com

Other administration tools aren't installed by default, including Server Admin, Workgroup Manager, System Image Utility, Podcast Composer, and Xgrid Admin. You can install these tools by downloading the Server Admin Tools for Mac OS X Lion Server from the AppleCare Support Downloads website at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/.

I hope this helps every one

No problems with Lion 10.7.2

Traditionally one could not upgrade from a client OS to a server OS nor vice versa. As Lion is now a Mac App Store only release and the server part of the OS is simply an additional download, what is the upgrade path for users with OS X Server machines? Do we have to do clean installs? Is it still an in-place upgrade with server tool download mandatory?

I was hoping someone could clear this up for me.

I upgraded to OSX Lion server 10.7.2 from Snow Leopard server with no problems.
I purchased to server upgrade: it tried to install immediately, warned me that I did not have Lion, told me I had already purchased Lion (which I had installed on a macbook previously).
Then nothing appeared to happen. While I was looking for advice on sites like this, after about 20 minutes the 'Do you want to install Mac OS X" screen popped up.
Lion must have been downloading in the background!
On selecting 'Continue', it started 'downloading additional components' with a forecast of 3 hours 52 minutes. This reduced a minute at a time for 3 minutes, then forecast 32 minutes.
After 29 minutes total (from the start) it rebooted to server, configured services, upgraded OD to 10.7.2, upgraded users, upgraded services
That took 6 minutes. (35 minutes from the start) it rebooted again, prompted to configure iCloud.

No settings were lost. VPNs, share points and shared screens were preserved. (But I had to restart screen sharing on a client that was active during the reboots, not a big deal)
