I watched the guy who replaced the hard drive when it failed in my 2011 iMac, and it didn't look very complicated. And though I, too, bought PC clones and modified them back in the day, I'd rather not do that now. And remember this came up to recommend swapping out the Fusion drive for an SSD.... so I just specified an SSD drive. I'm no fun, I know.

I ordered the 27" iMac with 8GB ram, the 3.4 CPU option, a 256GB SSD, and FCPX. I also ordered a Samsung T5 1TB external SSD, and an extra 32GB of memory.

Good job. That's the way to do it, get the performance you want, and guarantee no warranty problems.

Excellent choices! You will be much happier with the all-SSD as opposed to fusion drive! You will really like the Samsung T5 1 TB external SSD, too. Your new computer will really zip along with that extra RAM! The nice thing about using external SSD is that when you need more capacity and more storage, just buy additional external SSD.....

Yeah I'm pretty excited! My 2011 iMac is running fine, but I expect this will be much faster - mostly because of having the faster ports. Living with USB 2, Thunderbolt... 1 I think? The motherboard and video board died three years ago and Apple replaced them for free. There must have been a defect in the product or something, but that certainly prolonged the life. So I'll feel good about selling it to someone.
