^^^^That's the UPS I have. Mine usually idles around 250/260 watts, but under load will go up above 350.

Does it still do so in Big Sur? Can you post what your UPS options show? and are you relying upon that vendors software?

I use only sine wave UPSs for this kind of equipment. It's pretty easy to get 2 of them and then split up usage of the display, and everything else (hubs, speakers, whatever) on one UPS and the computer just itself with another 1500va unit.

I like the CyberPower sine wave UPS as found here:

Once a year they go on sale for around 119-120... The rest of the year they go for 200+

They work natively with macOS. Just plug them in. No drivers. The power System Prefs picks it right up.

Don’t know about Big Sur, but in Mojave the UPS settings are in Energy Saving.
Have never used third party software.

AFAIK, there has not been any third party software for controlling a UPS on a Mac in quite some time. They are simply not needed. The MacOS has sufficient controls to control any UPS IMHO.

I did use third party software many years ago.

I have a Cyberpower CP1500PCFLCD UPS and whilst it shows UPS in the Battery tab and shows me the battery charge there are no Shutdown options whatsoever.

^^^^Nope - Again look at my post above (Post #29). I've been running Big Sure since the first beta, I'm now on beta 11.1. In all of the iterations the Energy Saver preference panel was part of System Preferences. Nothing has changed.

I just now plugged in the APC UPS to my Mac Pro (Big Sur) for the first time and did not need to install any software. The APC appeared within System Preferences under Energy Saver. Note that when you open Energy Saver, you will be on the Power tab. You have to select the UPS tab then you will see several shutdown options to select from.

I purchased the APC UPS in 2015.

Google energy saver big sur

I think the bigger problem is that Apple doesn’t recognize the need for this on laptops.
In my case I have a vertically standing laptop with an external drive dock. I want the dock to be ejected before it loses all power. So I want the laptop to be alerted of the power loss and shutdown even when it is on battery.

You are describing a non-standard use case unfortunately, external peripherals are something else.
A laptop by definition has a built in UPS (battery), so not required.

Yes but the drive dock that's plugged into doesn't.

" Note: None of these settings are observed on a system with support for an internal battery, such as a laptop. UPS emergency shutdown settings are for desktop and server only."

The only reason this even came to my attention is because only recently did my UPS start acting up.

I believe I can do what I want with the software that the UPS provides.
