Dear Darricksailo,
Have been working on this a good bit, without success. This is the present position -
1. The phone was never unlocked – certainly ultrasn0w was never used.
2. We are in Ireland, and my son is with Meteor.
3. Are any of the “unlocking “ websites safe? How can I tell? – but I’d rather do it myself if that is possible (would hate to give in!)
4. I downloaded F0recast, which confirmed that the Baseband is 06.15.00, and that the phone is unlockable via Ultrasnow.
5. however, my Redsn0w seems to be stuck – when I go into it the page says “browse” (for IPSW) and I cannot get into the screen that offers Jailbreak or Extras – I could get into it before, but not now for some reason - then it stops working!
Best wishes,
Sile

quote me next time, i'll get a notification that you replied. just in case i don't device to take a look

i'm not too familiar with unlocking services but i would imagine you have to talk to the carrier the device it is locked to to get a official unlock

i'm not too certain about that, you can try redownloading the latest version of redsn0w or restart your device

run redsn0w, point it a 3GS 5.11 ipsw if it asks (you would need to download it: http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS5.1.1/041-4347.20120427.o2yov/iPhone2,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw)

click jailbreak and check the option to downgrade the ipad baseband (you can uncheck the option to install cydia if it is already jailbroken)

you should be able to activate the phone now and if you need it to be software unlocked, just download ultrasn0w. make sure the downgraded baseband is 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, or 06.15.00 (it will most likely be 5.13.04) if you are going to install ultrasn0w

what i personally would do after downgrading the ipad baseband is do a clean 5.1.1 restore (with the stitched shsh blob custom ipsw firmware package) and then jailbreak. you don't have to do this but i'm just merely saying what i would've done

Getting there, thank you - I downgraded the baseband on Redsn0w, and it worked! Next I'm going to do what you suggested, and the clean 5.1.1 restore with the stitched blob - can I do this on Redsn0w, as I don't seem to be able to do it on itunes?

You made an ipsw with a stitched blob using iFaith already. Using iTunes, hold shift and click restore. Choose the custom ipsw package iFaith made for you. That will clean restore the device to 5.1.1. Your baseband should stay at what it is right now (not 6.15.00)

Go to this site to see what carrier your device is locked to http://iphonefrom.com/

OK, I know a bit more now than I did. My son was given the phone by a friend, who had never used it (he has a shop and got it as a "freebie". Sean brought it to a Polish man who unlocked it - I didn't know this! I think, then, when the 6.1.3 update came out, on 19/3/13, he hit update, and everything stopped. That's the history.
At this stage everything is working except the phone itself - it's like an ipod. On http://iphonefrom.com/ the response was "may be sim-locked". I know the screen on itunes where the software can be restored, having tried it in the past, but now it does not come up, even holding down shift, so I can't restore to the stitched blob.
I'm sorry to torment you yet again, but I have learned a lot!
Thanks again,
Sile

What device did your son get? If it's an iPhone 4, the chances of going through a software unlock is very slim unless the baseband has been preserved all this time. If it's a 4s or 5, there is no way he can get a software unlock. He'll have to get an official one either from the carrier or online/eBay (if possible)

Edit: it was most likely software unlocked. Jailbreak and install ultrasn0w to have calling capabilities assuming its a compatible baseband with ultrasn0w

It's done! I did what you suggested in the last paragraph, and it works, and I've made several phone calls with it. I am very grateful - it's marvellous that there are people out there who will spend their time helping (and teaching) strangers. It has been most enjoyable, thanks again!

Glad to see it worked!
