If you can't buy a pay as you go data microsim for iPad then buy a normal size mobile broadband sim and cut it down to microsim size.
Have you tried this in Japan?

NTT docomo is selling data only prepaid SIM cards (3000 or 5000 yen i think) which are mini SIM cards. You can cut the SIM to microSIM size and insert it into the iPad.
Again, have you tried this in Japan?

Japan is not open. We are led to believe that we must use a SoftBank Micro SIMM in Japan. Looking forward to seeing your responses above.

I just found this post on Mobile Japan's Website. I think alot of people are awaiting the same answers but they are coming in slowly. I am also curious about cutting them down and seeing if it will work:

The US 3G iPad is here, and it works just fine with SoftBank's data contract (the metered part of it, "B" data card).

I have this contract: http://mb.softbank.jp/en/products/data_com/c02lc.html

The "A" card is useless (the flat plan - it's an E-Mobile plan on the 1.7ghz frequency band, incompatible with basically everything under the sun), but the "B" card, which uses SoftBank's own 2.1ghz network, works.

So, I assume that also NTT will work. Anyone else has any experience?

Thanks for the info.

If I can purchase an iPad here in Japan and use Softbank for 3G service and then when traveling to the US use an AT&T micro-SIM on a monthly basis, that will be okay in my case. It looks like that is possible.

Edit: I guess I had better do some research beforehand on what it takes to get an AT&T micro-SIM.

Yes, NTT DoCoMo will work too.

I was wondering if there were any updates on this? I want to buy an iPad for my wife. She is a Japanese citizen but lives here in the US with me. She and my daughter spend about two months a year in Japan. Her family's home has no internet access, so I wanted to get her the 3G model in hopes that she could use it to get online while she was there. I understand the only way to do it is to sign up for a 2-year contract with SoftBank, which is obviously out of the question. Also, AT&T's ridiculous $1/MB charges are out of the question. Has SoftBank softened their stance on this? I mean, will they make a monthly micro sim available to customers? If not, I will not be purchasing the iPad. Thanks for any updates...
