Alright well I just ordered that 4 port usb3 card .. for 19.99 i guess i cant go wrong. I will try it without power first. If not I guess i can snag power from my unused hard drive sled or I can split the sata power from the ODD

As already stated, there's little doubt about needing power on the 4 port card. The 2 port card and a powered hub would be the way to go if you don't want to tap the power.

thanks .. does that mean with that splitter I could still use an ssd and optical plus power the card ?

Yes, that is exactly what I used to do before I switched to a card that doesn't require supplementary power.

With four ports though, I'm worried about how much power the molex can provide and what you are intending to hook up to the card. I wouldn't, for example, try to charge 4 iPads at the same time.

no .. just using it for card reader or flash thumb drives .. and possible connecting a 2.5 external for a quick file transfer .. im not running hard drives or charging things off it

I also have an Orico 4 port USB 3 card. I used a 4-pin Molex to SATA power cable to power it.

The card has worked very well. however, I do have a minor gripe, the plate that covers the PCI-e slot didn't fit perfectly and took a bit of finagling before I could screw in the locking plate.

Hi Pastrychef. Some clarifyication, with your Orico USB 3, have you tried booting from a bootable external hard drive using USB 3.0 via pressing the option key or thru start up disk? Thanks.

I have never tried that but I highly doubt it will work since booting should happen before the drivers are loaded.

Thanks Pastrychef. Before clarifying with you I was aware that USB 3.0 cards do not support booting though was hoping Orico would be an exeption. It may have something to do with OSX missing a firmware for USB 3.0

Got the usb3 card and installed it..didnt connect power yet as I am waiting for a cable but usb3 shows under system profiler .. havent test speeds or anything yet either

I just tried out the 2 port card without power, ive never tried that before but what do you know my passport 3.0 and sandisk usb 3.0 extreme flash drive mounted and i was able to transfer 50gb between the two devices no problem
