The problem is with supporting multiple ports, not a single port like the iPad has. Really have to wait for USB4 -

Ok I think I quite liked your suggestion on the UNI Hub the one that you are using. I think I will go for it. But are you sure the USB-C ports on this Hub I can use an Adapter like the one in this picture ? with that which will help me use a USB-A Drive attach to it and it will read data then ? Because I wrote to the support of these guys the UNI Hub Team They are saying we cannot guarantee you, and hence cannot say confidently as we have not tried any third party Adapters which help you use a USB-A drive and can read data ?

You sure about this, that it works to read data ?

OK, I just tried this to double-check. I connected my 500GB Samsung T5 SSD to the hub using a USB-C cable (both ends) with the adapter on the end attached to the hub. I was able to open, read, and write to the SSD with both the Files app and FileBrowser for Business (which also supports external storage). I did not have to attach power to the hub because the SSD is a low-power device. It does work.

I'm using this hub -

But I did order the Uni hub because I like the detachable cable.

I ordered the Anker 7-in-1 linked earlier, for use with the 12.9"(2020) that I have on order. My thought was that I could plug it into the USB-C port on the Magic Keyboard when I can get that, which would let the hub lie flat on desk. But now I'm not so sure that's going to work.

I was thinking that port would be power and low data rates (e.g., keyboard) only as it the iPad connection is the Smart Connector on the back. It couldn't handle HDMI, I'm sure.

Since the keyboard port probably won't work and you'll have to use the iPad port, you might want to return that hub and go with the Uni hub and a longer USB-C cable with it so it can lie flat.

Thanks for the advice. Clearly I didn't think it through enough and I might see if I can cancel the order (it's backordered on Amazon). I'm mostly going to use the hub for transferring photos (from an SD) and occasional output to HDMI for work presentations. So it won't spend much of its life plugged in, but I can definitely see myself getting annoyed by it dangling off the side.

Yeah, that port on the keyboard is somewhat superfluous if you're using a hub with pass-through power to the iPad. I'll be curious to see what exactly that port can handle other than power. That's too bad as I originally looked at the new keyboard as being a full-purpose dock when a hub is connected to it. Nice thought, but ...
