Next iPads could do with 2 USB C ports! I think it's better than it was with the iPhone where you would need one set for the phone, and another for your mac or anything else (now you need one set for your iPhone and one set for your iPad, and if yo don't have a USB C mac then another set for that :p). The 3.5mm jack became a universal standard for a reason! considering the latest iPhones are no smaller than the 6s, and certainly no smaller than the 5s, I don't think the 'we need the space for other things' argument is very credible. And certainly not for much larger iPads.

I have been wireless for a while now and can’t imagine ever using wired headphones again, but I can see how frustrating it would be for those who need or want wired audio devices (especially in a ‘Pro’ iPad). And I am not sure why they just didn’t leave the jack in the new iPad pros since it appears to be thick enough to accommodate it, as this as it is.

Yeah - I only feel slightly bashed by your comments :p. The fact is, that the new iPad is awesome. These aren't "problems" they are irritants and aren't these forums meant for us to complain to like-minded tech enthusiasts? In the real world, no-one gives a hoot about our techie troubles. On the forums, we should be able to complain about headphone jacks, dongles, various 'iphone/ipad/mac-gates', uneven LCDs, dead pixels etc. Aren't you all the only people in the world that care at all about this stuff?? :) :)

You must work for the credit card company... :p

It's true, part of the fun of being into tech like this is solving problems and finding better solutions. It will work itself out in time and I will be even happier with the final result. These transitions are hard, but it's the kind of problem that I like to figure out...

I hear ya, that’s why I said no offense. Trust me, I complain on these boards all the time, and I usually get no sympathy. Lol. It’s all good. Like you say, that’s what these forums are for, to air things out. I was just saying, like with family or friends, be prepared to be needled a bit for the times when we grumble. It’s all part of the forum experience.

The only thing I miss from my 9.7 is the ability to use the lightning earbuds that come with my iPhone in my iPad. But I knew this going in.

FYI I'm pretty sure the headphone jack was left out because they physically couldn't fit it in there. At least I'm pretty sure there was a video with Cook or Ive saying that.

Now, to answer your question in a single word...NO. ;)

To elaborate:

  • At least I hope these forums are meant for discussion, and not complaining. ;)
  • Complaining is bad for your health. https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/complaining-rewires-your-brain-for-negativity-science-says.html or google "is complaining bad for you"
  • Complaining constructively (and without drama) about something critically to elicit a change may have some merits, but complaining to the wind (like on an online forum) is a waste of time. At least I'd think you could get your cathartic release somewhere else.
Hey, you asked. :)

Yes - it's a real mess isn't it. I have an iPhone XS (lightning connector or Airpods) and iPad Pro (USB-C or Airpods), a Zoom H6N (headphone jack), Microsoft Surface (headphone jack), Macbook Pro (USB-C/headphone jack) Bose QC35 (wired) noise canceling headphones and I use most of them daily. Various Apple earbuds accumulated over the years with either a lightning connector or a headphone jack. A bunch of headphone jack to lightning connectors. Two recently purchased Apple USB-C to headphone jack connectors.

I love the Airpods, but they are Apple only. I don't like Beats wireless products. I would get Bose noise-canceling wireless, but they don't have a W1 chip and are not as elegant. I still have many devices (including my work PC) with only a headphone jack/plug so I need to need to keep a wired analog solution around anyway.

Sheesh.

I suppose things will eventually get better when the iPhone, iPad, Macbooks and PCs are all USB-C.

Hey, we got the same amount of crap! Except I have a Tascam not a Zoom and big Sony headphones that have a DAC and can switch to a lightning cable that I got a year before Apple ditched headphone jack. I was too lazy to constantly switch cables and charge them though as they require power for the DAC only.

I also have the added bonus of a 1/4-inch jack for the headphone out on my desktop sound card.

I too love my AirPods but still curse the lack of 3.5mm whenever I need to do more critical listening in the Sony cans. My AirPods are kind of synonymous with podcasts for me at this point, not really music.

What makes you think the bold part is true? the W1 aspect of airpods is apple only, but they are just bluetooth headphones you can pair them with any device you want.

I genuinely didn't know that. I've only ever used them with iPhone, iPad or Macbook because they work so seemlessly with Apple devices. That's gonna help a lot when using my work PC (Windows).

Hey, you asked. :)

So you think people shouldn’t be allowed to criticize here? That would make these forums pretty dull. I for one am glad people are allowed to state their opinions here, positive or negative.
