I'm afraid what I said doesn't work. I thought that by changing my email in my Apple ID account to my MobileMe i can do "match my apple ID to my email address" but it doesn't work like that STILL. I think what I saw was a glitch because the error came up again.

What if you don't care about MobileMe email?

I just used MobileMe primarily for the (mostly) seamless syncing of contacts, calendar and bookmarks across my "iDevices". The email was a bonus that I just used to send occasional emails to myself. I don't need it.

I copied my iDisk files locally. I backed up my calendar, address book and bookmarks.

Can I just ignore MobileMe now? Basically forget it ever existed and start "anew" syncing calendar, bookmarks, contacts by associating my AppleID that I use for iTunes purchases with iCloud.

I am assuming the only reason to migrate a current MobileMe account to iCloud is to keep the email in tact, right?

Am I missing something here? Do I even need to migrate my MobileMe account to iCloud in my case?

I have been using my gmail account for all iTunes purchases and AppStore purchases and as my apple Id. I also have a MobileMe email address and want to make the MobileMe address my main appleid without losing all the purchases I've made on my iPhone and iPad.

Alternatively,I'd be okay keeping my gmail for purchases and for syncing everything but notes and mail and then ADDING my old MobileMe to my apple account....but the only option they give me is to create a new me,com address. Crazily restrictive!

Is there any way to do this?

FYI, months ago I tried to change a dead earthlink email iTunes Apple ID to my me.com that I use all the time. I learned after much discussion with mobile me support and apple that any time a me.com account is established it AUTOMATICALLY becomes an Apple ID, even if you don't use it. It's yours. It's there. It has none of your purchase history. Your previous APPLE ID's purchase history can't be merged with it. Same for mac.com

Apple has to do something about this.

(I was able to change it to something else, as long as it didn't end in mac.com or me.com. I was also able to make the "contact" email one I can be reached at that's different from the ID. Still, so frustrating and stupid. We bought the songs, apple. We should be able to keep them where we want.)

Apple is rumored to be working on a fix for this.

I hope letting you use one Apple ID (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) for iTunes purchases and a new me.com account for iCloud email isn't their "fix".

You can set up your new iCloud account and go to the App Store option in the settings for your iPhone and change that to the Google account. You keep your purchases as well as using the me.com iCloud account and all of those services.

I am in the same boat.

My apple ID is not an .me account. Back in the days, I never had much faith that I was always going to use a mac.com/me.com address because of the price tag. Now that it is free, I have this issue.

So just to make things clear here:

I have a mobile me account for mail, calanders, contacts, etc.
I have a .edu email for all of my purchases for the past five years

To get full functionality out of iCloud (including mail sync, photo stream, auto downloads, iTunes match, etc) I have to:

1) Transition my mobile me to iCloud
2) put that me.com address in the iCloud box on ios5
3) put my .edu email for the iTunes store part on ios5

^unless Apple does something to simplify this, yes, that is my understanding. IF your iTunes purchase history is married to an account other than your me.com or mac.com ID.

so there's no way I can replace my Gmail ID (that's in iTunes and that I used to register my Mac) with the new free @me.com address, even if I didn't have mobileme before?

So I called Apple on this issue and was told that when I set up iCloud, I should have used my non @me.com email address to make everything standard. Whether or not the person I spoke with really knew what she was talking about or not, she did send me this support article which answered my question about what will happen now that I have an ID for iTunes purchases and an ID for iCloud service. Here's the article:

If you don't care about MobileMe Mail....

I followed the process in this link

http://jaredsinclair.com/post/113681...le-id-and-keep

and it seemed to work fine for me. At this point I am basically untethered from MobileMe; that is to say I am using my @gmail account as both my iCloud id and my iTunes purchase id.

So the only thing I am waiting for is the ability to use my MobileMe @me address for iCloud Mail and Notes, if I want it. I could, of course, create a new @me account for iCloud Mail and Notes, but at this point I don't need it.

For me, the ability to have one account for everything outweighs having to deal with two separate accounts for iCloud and iTunes. Hopefully, at some point I can bring my current @me account into my @gmail iCloud account for Mail and Notes.

The above solution is great for people who haven't been using their me.com address for emails, contacts, etc. for umpteen years and don't want to be "untethered" from it. But if your non-music-purchase life is tied to a me.com or mac.com address, the best solution is to use me.com for iCloud and enter your old itunes ID for purchases.

I haven't updated yet, but from what I'm gathering, having two separate IDs this way in ios5 is not a big hassle. It's basically the way my iphone is set up now pre ios5. It just doesn't feel elegant.

Agreed. I am hoping that Apple comes to its senses and allows us to use current @me.com addresses for the Mail and Notes portion of a non-MobileMe iCloud account very soon. I am banking on that happening, I guess. Otherwise, I suppose if I want to use Mail and Notes, I will just have to create a new @me.com address and go the "non-elegant" route.

what about Facetime needing an email that's verified to your iCloud account? Now I'm reading THAT'S an issue as well. My entire family uses our iTunes Apple ID that we are keeping for purchases, each of us using our mobile me emails for iCloud. Fine. But we have to be distinguishable from one another on Facetime! Am I missing something?

Changing iPad apple ID

Can anyone help? - I've set up my iCloud on my MacBook Pro using my @me email and it works fine. I have just set my ipad2 up and put my gmail account in as my apple ID by mistake. If I go to iCloud on my ipad2, the apple ID field with my gmail account in is greyed out and I can't find anyway of changing it. Anyone know how to change it?

Thanks

Exactly my problem... when I tried logging in to iCloud [first setup] it asks for Apple ID which is what my current gmail email is associated with. Then it asks for me to create a NEW .me.com email address. Well my gmail email & my MobileMe email address is the same:

myname@gmail.com
myname@me.com

It won't let me use my already MobileMe address which it what I want, I really don't want to create a NEW me address and loose the prefix for my MobileMe address.

I've tried to change my AppleID in my iTunes account to my MobileMe and it says there's already and account in that name so I don't see how I can transfer my purchases from my Gmail Apple ID to my MobileMe Apple ID, unless someone knows how.

I also have the same problem. It won't let me use the me.com email address says it already in use and its mine WTF

I did exactly that on my iPhone so what I finally did (but take a deep breath first) was to Delete the gmail account in the iCloud setting on your iPad. It will ask if you want to keep data on the device or delete, I chose delete (as I wasn't sure where the data would go on the device) and it did take a while to delete. Once that is done, you will then get the Login screen again where you can then enter your MobileMe account login.

Bloody hell, going through all these responses ia logistical nightmare if you just want a simple straight forward elegant solution.

I was very much in the same boat as just about everyone here, i didnt want to wait for a fix from apple, my experiences with patches has been apple take far too long to fix things, and i just didnt want to wait.

So i bit the bullet, deleted all my apps from ios and mac devices, unauthorized my main apple id account, and just rebought all the ones i really needed on my mobileme/icloud account.

Its a sad state of afffairs that this is truly the only solution for the near future.
Cost about 150 bucks, but in some way its nice to start off with a clean slate, and dont download junk or hardly used apps ive accululated over the years.

A little bit poorer, but in my head, a got a simple straightforward icloud system up and happening.

Here's some instructions for you guys if you have an existing MobileMe account that they want moved over to iCloud but have a separate login for their iTunes and App store Apple ID. It took awhile but I have everything running correctly.

1. Copy everything from your iDisk to your computer.: The service stops sometime next year but now would be a good time to do it. You could switch over to Dropbox and retain some functionality.

2. Log into MobileMe.com: And walk through the transition procedure they have. It's easy to use and very cool looking. This allows you to keep your name@me.com email address.

3. Setup your iCloud account on your device: DO NOT use your AppleID if it's different than your MobileMe login. My Apple ID was a gmail account.

4. Select the Store Preference on your iOS device: Put your other Apple ID in here. In my case it was my gmail Apple ID.

You should now be able to have all the features of iCloud while still retaining your App Store and Music account. I've bought applications and it syncs seamlessly and doesn't ask me for any input.

This is exactly my situation, but it's not working. I just created a thread for this but can't figure it out. I will paste what I wrote in the thread:

Long story short, my Gmail account has long since been my iTAB (iTunes, Apps, Books) ID. But I was also a Mobile Me user, so I transitioned my MM (@me) account to iCloud (@me) in order to get the 25GB Free.

On my iPhone 4s, in Settings > iCloud, I have my @mac address (actually, I entered @me, but it switched it to @mac for some reason).

In Settings > Store, I have my gmail account (which I use for iTunes purchases).

BUT, when I download an app in iTunes on my Mac (running 10.7.2 and logged into my @me account), it doesn't automatically push to my iPhone 4s.

Am I doing something wrong???

According to this link, I think it should be working: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4895

Thanks for any help!!

[Edit - note, Automatic Downloads are turned On on my iPhone]

I think have the FIX.......

So I have been messing with this iCloud and gmail account for a while and had all but given up. It was not really THAT important to me as far as functionality but I still wanted it to work. I went as far as to try and install the iCloud console but have yet to make the jump to Vista/Win7.

I decided to give it another try today and called Apple Support. I spoke to Maria and she found my problem. My gmail account, which although was syncing fine, had the incorrect password under Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Gmail>Account. Once I changed that PW to my iTunes PW, everything clicked.

Hope this helps someone out there. Thanks to Maria, the mystery is solved - or at least mine was......

This is my problem too, i have my talk talk email address as my apple ID with all my apps on, but since setting that up i started using MobileMe as my primary email address, so how do i choose between losing the email account everything is connected to and everyone knows, and my apps/music?
That really is a no-brainer - get rid of the TalkTalk account. They are the worst ISP in the UK, and have been voted that for the last 4 quarters. I'm in the same position, so I plan to migrate all my on-line stuff to another email account (probably one on my own domain, but it could just as easily be a gmail account). Add a signature to all the emails you send out over the next few weeks along the lines of 'Please reply to myname@mynewgmail.com' and also change the Reply To field in Mail to your new address and you should sort out most of the potential pitfalls. After a month or two you should be largely divorced from TalkTalk. And then find a decent isp.
