Soo ... update from me: The first used X I received did have a swollen battery and a lot of scratches even though it was supposed to be mint, so I sent it back. Bought a refurbished "like new" one from a dealer for a little more money, and that one actually is like new: Not a single scratch, 100% battery health and Apple warranty until July 2020. I'd say that was a good deal.

Nice. Congrats. Enjoy your phone. Yeah never buy refurbished ones from third-party, only directly from Apple. They are basically brand new ones. Well i don't know where you live, Apple's own clearance sale is only available in the US.

I did buy the refurbished one from a third party. I try to avoid buying Apple refurbished, they're far more expensive than third parties, and almost never in stock. There are some amazing third party dealers out there which offer like new quality for far better prices than Apple.

IMO eBay is the worst with buying iPhones. I go strictly swappa.

Yep, the ebay one was the bad one, though I have to say I bought tons of stuff off ebay and like 90% of it is as described, which is good enough considering the prices. There are a lot of trustworthy commercial dealers around in Europe, they're usually great to deal with.

You would get one more year of support. You seem to keep your phones for a long time so it really depends on the value to you. You really can't go wrong either way. Like you said I would wait until that period either between the announcement and the release or just after the release to score a new phone.
