I have a 12.9” M1 iPad Pro and a mini 6. To me, it’s the best of both worlds. I use the mini 6 for reading around the house, light content consumption and web browsing. I use the iPad Pro mostly with the Magic Keyboard. Occasionally I will use it on the couch, but if it’s off the MKB then I’m probably using it for sheet music at the piano. iPads are so great for musicians.
Except the MBA is about an inch wider. As I said before, for me, the bigger screen size makes a huge, positive difference. But everyone is different, and the only way to find out how it works for you is to try it. Actually, you could try holding your MBA with the screen closed to get a feel for how big the 12.9 is -- I believe they are pretty close in size.

I was a musician in a former life and know many, many musicians who use a 12.9" iPad Pro on their music stand instead of the traditional music store folder full of sheet music. It's a wonderful device for that purpose. My neighbor plays piano and she has a foot pedal for her iPad, so she puts all her music on that and then she just hits the pedal when she needs the page to turn. You are so describing my world! As a vocal musician, the 12.9 inch iPad Pro is so much easier to carry around than a bunch of bulky aria books! And I love how the Mini 6 can be held in one hand and fit into jacket pockets.

I have Magic Keyboard. It’s not about just about absolute weight. I just like the way iPad Pro tilts and the top heavy balance is perfect for out doors in sun or bright light. The screen on iPad Pro is amazing compared to MBA, I sit on the lounger by the pool or under wooded area of my backyard.I travel with My MBP16 and an iPad Pro. So, you mean "portability" in the broadest sense: not just weight, but also ergonomics (which I agree is an important consideration).I have Magic Keyboard. It’s not about just about absolute weight. I travel every other week, never had problem in the flight. It fits the tray tables, though barely. If you want to have other things on tray table with MBp16, it won’t fit. Anyways, I never was the guy who put drink next to the laptop on tray table. So, you mean "portability" in the broadest sense: not just weight, but also ergonomics (which I agree is an important consideration).
I also have a 16 inch MBP, but I've yet to travel with it. It's too big for most hotel safes, and it doesn't fit on coach seat tray tables. (I occasionally get bumped-up to business class, but I'd rather not take the gamble of carrying the 16" in hopes of getting lucky.) So I just carry my 12.9 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard.
Actually, on a recent flight I saw a musician who solved the problem of coach seating: he put his MBP16 on his lap -- no problems with cramped tray tables that way!
I’ve traveled with mine. Never bothered even taking it out of the bag in the airport, not to mention my cramped coach seat. Just too many opportunities for damage and I don’t need to get work done THAT bad.I travel every other week, never had problem in the flight. It fits the tray tables, though barely. iPad Pro is my fav in the hotels, sidecar on IPad as extension to MBP display is fun to use. And I use GitHub code spaces, which can get work done on iPad laying in the bed.
Agreed. I avoid taking out MBP16 and IPad Pro, but I have to at times on Monday morning to get stuff done to get ahead of the day. To be fair, the last time I flew, I saw a guy in the seat across the aisle from me struggling pretty hard with his 12.9” iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard too. I just think planes are not a great environment to try to do anything with a large device. It’s hard enough for me to just get down the aisle, get in my seat, and find the seatbelt, and I’m a pretty puny guy. I tend to stick to my iPhone and AirPods on planes these days.
