the out on the switcher would go to the tv. The switch gives you the added imputs to the tv. I know you have the receiver, in my mind there is no reason to run the video from the Atv through the receiver, just the audio. So if you have hdmi from Atv to switch, and any other sources, and switch to tv, then go with an optical cable from Atv to the receiver. All will be good.

I will try this and let you all know if it works. Out to the tv. Then one in that goes to the receiver, one to the directv and one to the atv2.

There you go! I cheerfully stand corrected. :)

I can imagine, I had the very same concerns initially about the potential for issues... Very glad that it works in my setup, simplifies things a great deal.

That said, some gadgets doesn't like switching at all unfortunately. Switching to another input makes my PVR lose sound until it is power cycled, for example. It doesn't matter if the PVR is connected directly to the TV, to the AVR or to the HDMI switch.

Monoprice HDMI Switch

+1 on the HDMI Switch from Monoprice.

My amp is too old for HDMI, and my TV only has 1 HDMI input. For me I leave the TV on the HDMI input and let the switch handle changing to other HDMI components (i.e. the TV doesn't change inputs, the HDMI switch does):

Cable Box
DVD Player
ATV

All are plugged into the HDMI switch. I use a Logitech Harmony remote and when I press "Watch Apple TV" it changes the HDMI input and turns on the ATV (but that doesn't always work, and required the ATV remote...) Likewise "Watch DVD," "Watch Cable TV."

The clean, elegant solution is obviously to throw money at newer TVs, newer AV Amps, etc....but this seems to be working just fine as long as the remote can see the HDMI switch.
